2 1. Click “Login” (must be registered); then enter email and password registered 2. Select samples that contain Indian immigrants: USA, Canada, UK, Nepal, etc. samples 3. Select variables: as few or as many as needed variables 4. Select cases: BPLCTRY = “India” 5. Customize and submit extract request 6. When notified by email that extract is ready, download data and documentation to your computer 7. Analyze using your favorite software. – Make an extract of Indian immigrants:

3 1. Login: a. click “Login” on home page b. Click “Login” on registration page c. Enter registered email address & password

4 Click “Select Data” or “Saved Extracts” (to revise a previous extract) Click “Select Data” or “Saved extracts” (to revise a previous extract)

5 First, click here, to select samples (the default is “all samples in the database”) Integrated Metadata: Variables Menu Only start here if you wish to see variables for all samples

6 2b. Select Samples: click “Canada” box. Scroll down to click Nepal, UK and USA. Click “Canada” box (or click individual census years, if preferred).

7 2c. When finished selecting samples, click: “submit sample selections”. To select a sample, click a country or census year, as desired.

8 Step 3. Select Variables: a. Mouse-over “Person”, then click “Nativity and Birthplace” Mouse-over person for drop down menu, then click “Nativity and Birthplace”

9 Step 3b. Select variables, including BPLCTRY (Country of Birth) Click box beside “BPLCTRY” to place “country of birth” variable in cart

10 3c. After BPLCTRY, select other variables, and, click “Data Cart” to go to next step. When finished selecting variables, Click “Data Cart” to go to next step.

11 Step 4. Review selections. Add/remove variables or samples. Or click “Check out”

12 Click here (box for any variable), to attach characteristics of mother, father, spouse, or household head Check out. Step 2a, set variable options: “Select Cases” and “Attach Characteristics” Click here to select cases by BPLCTRY.

13 Click here, to select every person in a household containing a person born in India Step 2b. Scroll down, select “India” (etc.). Click “Continue to next step”

14 Step 2c. Attach characteristics of mother, father, spouse of household head, then click “Continue to next step”

15 Step 3. Customize sample sizes (if desired), then click “Continue to next step”

16 Step 4a. Review selections

17 Describe the extract to make it identifiable to you, in case you wish to revise it someday. Step 4b. Review selections, scroll to bottom, enter description, and click submit extract

18 Step 4c. Extract confirmation. Wait for email to download extract. Logout if you wish. Note: Once the extract is confirmed, Data Cart is now emptied.

19 5. Email to download extract. Click the link, login, and download metadata and extract Note: Acknowledge both MPC and the statistical offices that provided microdata
