4 SLA’s Advocacy program SLA's Advocacy program is dedicated to promoting the value of information professionals and the profession. Advocating the profession to employers, the public, and others. Monitors and actively works to proactively shape legislation and regulatory proposals that affect SLA's membership.

5 SLA Units Chapters 58 regional Chapters that elect officers, issue bulletins or meeting announcements, hold three to nine program meetings during a year, and initiate special projects. Examples 1.Asian Chapter 2.Boston 3.Europe 25 Divisions representing subject interests, fields, or types of information- handling techniques. Each Division elects officers and publishes a bulletin / newsletter. Most conduct professional programs during SLA’ Annual Conferences. Examples 1.Business & Finance 2.Science & Technology Caucus is an informal group within the Association intended to serve as a focus for the interaction of members who share a common interest not covered by any Association Chapter, Division, or Committee. Examples 1.Archival & Preservation 2.Retired Members 3.Baseball Each SLA membership includes membership in one chapter and one division. Chapters bring together information professionals where they work and live; divisions bring together those who practice in a unique discipline of special librarianship. For an optional nominal fee, members may join additional chapters and divisions as well as caucuses (a caucus is an informal network of discipline or interest not covered in other divisions). 11 About SLA Asian Chapter  Established in 1999. Celebrating 11 purposeful Years.  One of the bigger chapters, covering a large geographical area consisting of over 20 countries.  More than 185 members.  Presence in countries like Bangladesh, Bhutan Brunei, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Laos, Macau, Malaysia, Myanmar, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam.  Mission Statement:  To provide a networking facility for all Asian Librarians and facilitate visits.  To provide global access to other Chapters and Divisions, wikis, blogs and Community of Practice areas.  To organize training, workshops, seminars and conferences in the Asian region.  To celebrate the diversity of the Asian Chapter through its members, recognizing the cultural identities.

13 Membership Privileges Full Member  Shall have the right to vote, to hold any Association or unit elective office or appointive position.  Can affiliate with one Chapter and one Division without payment of additional fee.  Receives the official journal at no additional charge. Organizational Member  Shall have the right to affiliate with one Chapter and one Division without payment of additional fee.  Receives the official journal at no additional charge.  Other benefits of this membership category shall be determined by the Board. Student Member  Student membership may be maintained only while actively a student, but for no more than three years.  Has the right to vote, to hold any Association or unit elective or appointive position, to affiliate with one Chapter and one Division without payment of additional fee, and to receive the official journal at no additional charge.  SLA awards $30,000 in scholarships yearly.
