Lunch & Learn Teleseminar: Social Media 101 with Regina Walton Reviewing the basics of social media, best practices, case studies and Q&A. August 18, 2010 @ 12 noon ET.

All rights reserved, Regina Walton, Organic Social Media 2 Types of Social Media ● Blogs - A blog is a website where posts are listed in chronological order. Blogs usually have comments which are posted along with the original entry ● Microblogs - Microblogging is a form of blogging where users provide brief updates and publish them on microblogging sites. You’ve probably heard of Twitter. Microbloggers can submit their updates via the web, social media platforms (often referred to as “clients”), via text messages, instant message or even email. ● RSS - RSS is a syndication format that allows websites and blogs to distribute their content as feeds to users. Instead of having to visit the website, users can sign up for the feed provided by the website or blog and using an RSS reader or aggregator (like Google Reader), access the feed. Users can sign up for as many feeds from different websites as desired and then access and manage those feeds all at once using their RSS reader.

All rights reserved, Regina Walton, Organic Social Media 3 Types of Social Media ● Photo Sharing - Photo sharing sites allow users to upload and post their photographs online to share them with other users or to post on websites and blogs. ● Podcasts - A podcast is digital audio that is distributed via the Internet for playback on a user’s computer or portable media device – a mp3 player such as an iPod. ● Bookmarking and Social News (digg, reddit, de.li.cious) - Social bookmarking allows web users to save, organize and share their bookmarks of web pages on the Internet (vs. their own computers). Social news sites allow users to submit web pages and articles and have other users vote on them. The links with the highest number of votes usually get featured on the site's front page.

All rights reserved, Regina Walton, Organic Social Media 4 Types of Social Media ● Social Networking - Social networking services – Facebook and MySpace being the most well-known- are websites that allow online users to connect and share information with other online users. New player: Google+ ● Video Sharing - Video sharing allows users to upload and share videos to video sharing website such as YouTube. Other users can watch the videos, comment on them, share them with other users and even embed them on their own websites and blogs.

All rights reserved, Regina Walton, Organic Social Media 5 Types of Social Media ● Wikis - A wiki is a collaborative website that allows users to contribute to and edit the content on the website. Wikipedia is a well-known wiki. Wikifarms host multiple wikis and provide tools for users to create their own wikis. ● Location services – These services allow users to let the people they're connected to know where they are. These can be pushed out to other services like Facebook and Twitter. However, you can also hide your check-ins. From a business perspective, it's good to be in these so that your customers can check-in when they're at your location. ● Let's stop here for some questions.

(#ReachInt) Twitter Chat schedule on Google Docs#ReachInt

All rights reserved, Regina Walton, Organic Social Media 10 The Big Four

All rights reserved, Regina Walton, Organic Social Media 11 The Big Four ● Twitter - ReTweets – RTs – A retweet is when you republish something from another Twitter user. – This spreads the word to your followers on Twitter. – It causes a ripple effect and that helps more people hear about it – Old format (still used a lot) ● RT @reginawalton I'm having a great day!

All rights reserved, Regina Walton, Organic Social Media 12 The Big Four ● Twitter - @replies or mentions – Want to reply to a tweet that someone else has posted or talk to someone on Twitter? – Use an @reply by using the @ symbol followed by the other person's username. – Why? When you use an @reply, the other person will see your post, even if he or she doesn't follow you.

All rights reserved, Regina Walton, Organic Social Media 13 The Big Four ● Twitter – Direct Messages (Dms) – A Message (previously called a Direct Message) is a private message sent via Twitter to one of your followers. (This is different than mentions and @replies.) ● In turn, people you follow can send you a private message. ● You cannot send a direct message to a user who is not following you – Weiner – he thought he was sending a DM.

All rights reserved, Regina Walton, Organic Social Media 14 The Big Four ● Facebook Facebook – Profiles – personal connections ● Friends – Pages – businesses or organizations ● Likes ● Types: – Business – Wiki-like pages

All rights reserved, Regina Walton, Organic Social Media 17 The Big Four ● G+ - if it gains momentum and can keeps it, the Big Four will change to the Big Five. G+

All rights reserved, Regina Walton, Organic Social Media 18 Help!!! (aka “platforms” or “clients”) ● Hootsuite: http://www.hootsuite.comhttp://www.hootsuite.com ● Seesmic: http://www.seesmic.comhttp://www.seesmic.com ● TweetDeck: http://www.tweetdeck.comhttp://www.tweetdeck.com ● These sites help you manage your accounts from one location. They're evolving and getting better as they go. Twitter recently bought TweetDeck. – G+ isn't on these sites yet because they've not opened the application programming interface (API) for developers.

All rights reserved, Regina Walton, Organic Social Media 19 Help!!! (aka “platforms” or “clients”)

All rights reserved, Regina Walton, Organic Social Media 20 Best Practices ● Experiment – this is all new. ● Assign people to manage ● Have a policy – very important ● Have conditions – sets the tone ● Wash, rinse, and repeat - (I use this a lot) – What this means is to set goals, create a strategy, try it out, see how it goes, adjust as needed. – Example: FB questions vs. SurveyMonkey ● Let's stop here for questions, Round 2
