2 Long term goal Adopt 21 st century’s teaching approaches to enhance students understanding of the language English.

3 Short term goals  To establish an English speaking environment.  To promote process writing.  To minimize linguistic errors.  To enhance written expression.  To inculcate research skills.  To promote collaborative learning.  To develop analytical and evaluative approach to learning.  To foster the process of critical thinking.  To groom the student in the most appropriate way to face the real world. to face the real world.

4 Challenges faced by a teacher Challenges   Learners rarely work at the same pace.   Active students may dominate classroom activities.   Passive students may feel intimidated by the competition. The active students may feel that they are being held back. Solutions  To ensure some success for all learners classroom, teachers must determine what each learner needs and wants to learn.  When active students dominate the class, politely stop them  When materials may be too easy for active students or too difficult for passive students, make the materials cross several levels or when some students finish their work earlier, assign them additional follow-up tasks

5 Techniques Sample group activities: 1. Whole class activities can be used to warm up and wrap up classes. (E.g. small talk, brainstorming, listening to audiotapes or viewing videotapes, projects) Group A.doc Group B.doc 2. Small group activities can be used to enhance time to practice target language in real communication. (E.g. discussions, conversations, problem-solving, jigsaw activities, board games, collaborative writing, information gaps, role plays) 3. Pair activities can be used to practice verbal interaction in short periods of time (E.g. dialogues, role plays, pair interviews, dictations, written work) 4. Individual activities can be used to assess individual achievement. Invite volunteers to demonstrate activities, advanced students first Provide students with same text, but different tasks
