3 Trujillo was the dictator from the historical setting of “My First Free Summer” by Julia Alvarez. As we read the biography on Rafael Trujillo, annotate each paragraph. Reading purpose: I can analyze how individuals affect events in a text through notetaking and discussion. PRACTICE

5 Early Life Rise to Power Rule Effect of Rule Legacy Put the title for your notes at the top: Early Life, Rise to Power, etc. Each notecard should include 4—5 bulleted facts. Number the upper right hand corner. You will have five notecards. Add the source, in MLA format, at the bottom. (IN THIS CASE, you may write this once.) RESEARCH AND NOTECARDS

6 TIME FOR THE CREATIVE PART Using the Writing Process, begin your brainstorm using the biographies as the historical context. You may draw a graphic organizer, a bubblemap, do bullets, a chart, a timeline or make notes for the different stages of the plot or draw a plot diagram. Have something to show from your pre-writing stage. H.O.T. ? What would it be like living under a dictatorship, as a young person, with your family? ********************************************************************** In your pre-writing process, remember to address the 5 W’s. Your setting is an important part of the historical context and background. Remember to use your biography to help with the historical context. Your character will be fictional, your writing piece will be in the form of a narrative. No LESS THAN 2 pages.
