Overwiev: In today’s presentation I would like to very shortly tell you something about my studies, history and my work. I’d like cover three points: firstly my studies history, secondly why I choose that kind of studies and finally advantages and disadvantages of working in this profession. Monika Miedziarek, Poznan University of Technology

I’m Electrical Engineer I graduated Jan Amos Komenski State School of Higher Vocational Education in Leszno. I’m also Master of Computing Science. Specialty Computer Engineering I graduated Poznan University of Technology. Now I’m PhD Student in Poznan University of Technology, Institute of Computing Science Monika Miedziarek, Poznan University of Technology My studies history:

Work: I work in Jan Amos Komenski State School of Higher Vocational Education in Leszno, as a university teacher – assistant. Monika Miedziarek, Poznan University of Technology

Why that kind of study? Why that kind of study? Monika Miedziarek, Poznan University of Technology

Why that kind of study? Why I choose this studies. It’s a really good question. When I finished high school I didn’t know what I want to do in my life. I think the same problem has a lot of young people. I just knew that : I like mathematic. I like challenges. These studies seemed interesting.

Monika Miedziarek, Poznan University of Technology Man and Woman proportion. Electrical Engineering 2 (w) – 90 (m) Computer Engineering 2 (w) – 35 (m) When I started electrical engineering first year was very hard because it was something about 90 men, which I didn’t known, and only two women me and my friend Danka. Unfortunately we were allocated to different groups. So sometimes I felt alone. When I started computer engineering it was similar also two woman but only 35 men.

Family support I remember that my grandfather really supported me, he was proud that his granddaughter study electrical engineering. He gave me my first soldering iron and screwdriver set. Unfortunately, he died before I became an engineer. Ability to adapt Men have different interests than women. If you want to be a woman in men’s world you must adapt. It’s mean that you must find a common ground. I’m started interesting in football, reading men’s newspapers to had topic to conversation. Hard work This study are not easy. There are a lot of technical knowledge. And only hard work is guarantee of success. Monika Miedziarek, Poznan University of Technology What do you need to survive:

MY WORK MY WORK Monika Miedziarek, Poznan University of Technology

First job – assistant of production menager My first real job was assistant of production manager. I worked in company dedicated to creating steel construction. It was not related to the electrical engineering industry, but it was also very interesting. I really liked production manager, he taught me a lot of different things. In this job it was a few advantages: I could do the same things that men do. I knew technical drowning better than production manager, it was a big plus. As a woman I always had a different view than other employee, often better.

It was also some disadvantages. I was the only woman in hall. Some employees were happy that finally woman working there. But, some employees treated me worse, because I’m a woman. Especially older workers didn’t accept me on this position. First job – assistant of production menager

Monika Miedziarek, Poznan University of Technology Current job – University teacher Now I work as a university teacher – assistant in Polytechnical Institute. Why I like this job. I have good contact with students. I enjoy teaching. I’m doing my PhD. Parts of lecturers supports me and give good advice.

Current job – University teacher It’s also some disadvantages. Some people give me to understand that they don’t want me here in this school. I'm younger and I'm a woman so I'm worse. I’m not. I’m as good as they are maybe even better. So, I don’t give up, and I work hard, as hard as I can to proved them how wrong they are.

I would choose exactly the same studies. If i could turn back time …

Never give up! It’s hard to be a woman in men’s world. Monika Miedziarek, Poznan University of Technology Advice for young woman:

Don’t let convince yourself that you don’t belong here. Advise for young woman:

Do what you want to do, not what someone tells you. We live in a free world and we can do what we want. Advise for young woman:
