© Fraunhofer IBP Auf Wissen bauen Optimised Performance of Energy Supply Systems with Exergy Principles - LowEx Communities Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics (IBP) Department Energy Systems Anna Kallert Tekn. Dr. Dietrich Schmidt

Innovative city and urban concepts How will the development of city systems looks like in future? Smart Infrastructures & supply systems Plus-energy-buildings/ communities Renewable energymix Intelligent electrity grids Climate oriented city development Smart Mobility & E-mobility

Building systems Supply systems Sustainable community energy systems Communities as energy systems

The LowEx approach for communities Application of LowEx approach for optimization of community demand adapted supply. The very efficient so called low exergy supply and use are of particular interest (see green boxes).

Scope Improvement of energy conversion chains on a community level Significant reduction of energy demand and GHG-emissions Integration of renewable heat and cold sources

Objectives The focus is on technologies and innovative concepts using low valued energy sources (LowEx) and renewable energies for the heating and cooling of neighborhoods and cities. The objective is to demonstrate the potential of low exergy thinking on a community level as energy and cost efficient solution in achieving 100% renewable and GHG emission-free energy systems. This includes: Storage concepts Networks / grids Control systems und strategies Business concepts System integration!

Waste heat utilization and cascading via synergies Source: REAP Project, TU Delft...only possible with smart management systems Ice rink Swimming pool Supermarket Residential Living

Efficient supply options “anergy networks”

demand Buildings suitable for use of low valued energy (LTH and HTC) distribution LT DH&C 3-pipes system Integral system approach for the total built environment - LowEx approach for the Mine Water Project Community case study in Heerlen (NL) supply Minewater Additional RES biomass, solar

Assessment methodology Level of detailLevel of aggregation

Expected outcome Design guidelines for optimised low exergy systems on community scale Technology solutions and new development approaches for smart distribution solutions Case study evaluation and best-practice catalogue Exergy evaluation on community scale Our target groups: Energy supply and technology industry, Project developer and housing companies, Decision makers within communities, Academia, research and education
