2. Earlier know as New Amsterdam was apart of the thirteen colonies. It was one of three middle colonies.

3. Henry Hudson founded New Amsterdam in 1609. They settled at the southern tip of Manhattan Island. Renamed to New York to honor the Duke of York who conquered the Dutch colony in 1664 The Iroquois were living there at the time of his conquest.

4. Not dominated by a specific religion which gave way to religious freedom for Quakers, Catholics, Lutherans, Jews and others. New York was governed as a Royal Colony. They allowed different religious and ethnic groups settle there

5. New York’s main commodities are Furs, Wheat, Glass, Shoes, Livestock, Shipping, Shipbuilding, Rum, Beer, and Snuff. The Fur trade was huge in New York’s economy. Beaver pelts were highly prized at this time because they could be used to make waterproof clothing and the pelts by-product was used to make medicines and perfumes. New York was also referred to as the “breadbasket colony” because the colony produced so many crops as a result of its fetile land.
