6 6 HARC Meeting, March 4, 2010 Department of Homeland Security/ US Coast Guard Fire Suppression Rule Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) published Feb. 24, 2010: “Carbon Dioxide Fire Suppression on Commercial Vessels; Proposed Rule” (75 FR 8432) Comments due: May 25, 2010 Clarifies that USCG-approved alternatives to CO2 may be used –HFC-227ea, FK-5-1-12, IG-541, water mist –Some spaces on several classes of commercial vessels –Sets general requirements for alternative systems –Definition of systems to include water mist and clean agents New requirements for existing and new CO2 systems –In spaces that could be accessed by persons onboard specified vessels –Must be equipped with lockout valves Already required for shore-based facilities by NFPA 12, 2008 ed. –Must use olfactory additives
