5 Picture 1:

6 Facts:  Pictures of Irish from the early 1800s  Rich in Nutrition, Potatoes were eaten at almost every meal  Irish raised livestock and other crops but mainly sold them for money  Ireland already very poor, suffered a potato famine in the 1840s- potatoes rotted the ground and storage bins  This killed over 1 million people  1 million more left for the United States

8 Facts:  In the 1840s Ireland officially becomes part of Great Brittan  Ireland is mainly made up of agricultural laborers  Great Britain raises the rent on both the land and the cost of housing- also cost of the grain for the fields  The Irish are evicted from their homes at alarming rates  It is very tragic for the Irish

10 Facts:  Although Great Britain did not cause the fungus that killed the potatoes and caused the illness Ireland still blames Great Britain for the famine because they were slow to act  Great Britain did little to help the living situation of the Irish and suffering was high  Some Irish were blamed themselves for the famine- it was caused as a result of their character  they were blamed for taking advantage of the British in this situation  The British started to pay for some of the Irish to immigrate to the U.S.

11 Questions on Famine Pictures 1. What was life like in Ireland for many people living during this time?  Use adjectives to describe…. I.e hard… 2. Why might people want to leave Ireland and come to America? 3. In many cases, landlords actually paid the passage for their tenants’ voyage to America. Why do you think it was worth it to these landlords to pay tenants just to leave their lands? - As a result hundreds of thousands of Irish left in the 1840s and 1850s.

14 Notes:  Many Irish left Ireland in great numbers to flee the potato famine and the bad living conditions  Although some went to live in the surrounding countries, most went to America

16 Notes:  Irish who made the passage often did in cramped passage that was very unhealthy  The Irish had to deal with new dangers once they arrived in America. Competition for jobs and housing in New York was very fierce  Before 1855 passengers could disembark directly onto the wharves of Manhattan. After 1855 Immigrants from Ireland came through Castle Garden at the lower tip of Manhattan.  Many Irish immigrants were not seen as favorable immigrants during this time

18 Notes:  Although most Irish stayed in New York or Boston, some left and went west to seek their fortune.  They faced even greater challenges as they traveled west out into the prairie.

Do the pictures depict the Irish immigrants in a favorable or an unfavorable way? 3. What could have been some challenges the new immigrants could have faced once they arrived in the United States?

21 Notes  Like many immigrant groups the Irish tried hard to hang onto their heritage- for example we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, March 17 every year in celebration of Ireland's patron Saint  St. Patrick's Church in New York City, on of the largest, oldest and most famous Catholic churches in America was built by the Irish and hold a memorial to Irish soldiers killed in the Civil War.

23  The Irish played a key role in the labor movement of the mid- to late 1800s  They helped to organize some of the first Labor Unions that existed in the United States.  The First Labor Union was called the Molly Maguires- named after a famous Irishman- worked to improve mines and working conditions on the railroads

25 Notes  More than 150,000 Irishman fought for the Union (North) in the Civil War  There was a draft that required all men to pay $300 or fight- the Irish called this the “rich men’s exemption”  Many of the Irish did not agree with the purpose of the Civil war though and agreed with slavery  There were New York City Draft Riots in 1863- these riots targeted the African American Population of New York, Hundreds were killed in the Riots
