PC Praktikum – spring semester 2013 Biology and Nanosciences Dr. Nico Bruns (room 4.07, 2 nd floor, PC) phone: 061 267 38 32 nico.bruns@unibas.ch http://www.chemie.unibas.ch/~pcpraktikum/

Components Marks: preparation / discussions / reportsmin. 24 points every experiment at least 3.5 points‏ error calculationsgrade 4 or higher examgrade 4 or higher error calculationslecture and exercises written exam~1.5 hour at the end of semester experiments discussion 6 (36 points max)experiment analysis report

Experiments Flash photolysis Light scattering Differential scanning calorimentry (DSC) Electrochemistry Kinetic gas theory Viscosimetry Nanosciences Flash photolysis Vapour pressure Differential scanning calorimentry (DSC) Electrochemistry Kinetic gas theory Viscosimetry Biology

Responsibilities Discussion, experiment: assistants Report correction / discussion, points: assistants Assistants' office hours: Wednesdays, 13:00-14:00 Experiment description / schedule / contact Exam, serious problems: Nico Bruns http://www.chemie.unibas.ch/~pcpraktikum/ user: pc; password: pc

Preparation Discussion / experiment a date: Zeitplan online Study & understand the experiment description (script, books, internet,...)‏ Discussion: ask if something is unclear The discussion is not a lecture!

Procedure When? (Zeitplan online)‏ Prepare for the exercise (description, library, textbooks,...)‏. Discussion ok Experiment Report (ONE WEEK!, hand in by email)‏ bad: discussion again and correction good: points :-)‏ NOT ok Make a new date prepare come again.

Experiment is completed with...... A report Do not copy the experiment description! General introduction (short)‏ Background: max. 5 important equations Data: raw data – data analysis error analysis – final result Discussion: do the results make sense? no? why not? Report has to be in english (however, we do not grade for langauge) Copies of reports from other students (with the same mistakes) or internet resources will not be accepted Hand report in by email to the assistants.

Experiment is completed with...... A report Use Excel (or similar programs)! Sample protocol can be found on the web-site (Please note: Error calculation in this protocol is not perfect and will be covered in more detail in the error calculation homework).

Tips Computers: computer room ground floor SECURITY: Phone numbers in Praktikum room Characteristics of dangerous substances Protective glasses / gloves in Praktikum room First aid, eye wash and fire extinguisher located at door of Praktikum room No food / drinks / smoking in Praktikum room Safe clothing including closed shoes

Exam Ca. 1.5 hours long, written 5-6 questions on Praktikum experiments and related problems: Theoretical background Method Experimental procedure Data analysis Example calculations Error calculation / analysis  If failed: Repetitipon exam  Repetition of an experiment  In hopeless cases: repetition of the Praktikum
