Client’s questions  To what extent do residents appreciate the need to use heating efficiently and recycle solid waste as part of their contribution to the CMP?  To what extent is there evidence of this understanding in their behaviour?  What new approaches can be identified to improve heating usage and solid waste recycling in the unit of accommodation?  You need to break these down!  Choose a unit of accommodation first

Interim report (1 per team)  Report on approach to be used –Introduction to project and the aspect(s) of it that you are looking at –Discussion of ideas, key questions and approach you are going to use –Plan for remainder of project  Schedule of activities  Who does what in your team

Interim presentation (1 per team)  5 minutes to present the key points –What questions are you looking at (why?) –Method for collection of evidence –Plan for remainder of project –No more than 5 slides –Time will be strictly limited  Up to 5 minutes for questions

Possible pitfalls  Weak leadership  Not utilising whole team  Poor internal deadlines  Not reading the brief –Not just technology  Not rehearsing the presentation  Doing too much in series –One thing after another

Working in Teams

Working in teams. How might you choose to work? Some extreme models for discussion  Power Culture  Role Culture  Matrix Culture  Person Culture

The Power Culture  Power at the centre  Unambiguous decision-making  Flexible to change  Limited by size  Potential for a power vacuum  The leader can get too overloaded.

The Role Culture  Expansion and strength  Clear control  Inflexible to change  Poor decision-making  Should a group of otherwise ‘equal’ students consider establishing a hierarchy?

The Matrix Culture  Decisions by experts  Highly flexible to change  Lack of leadership  Control uncertain  Potential for losing sight of the overarching aims of the project.

The Person Culture  Low maintenance  Fluid and adaptive  No clear leadership  Control by politics?  Will it deliver?

Key issues to address  What skills/interests do you have in your group?  Keep records of who does what because the peer assessment will not be accepted without evidence.  Consider how to match the skills in the group to the work required.  Plan how you will deal with individuals’ or sub-group’s failure to deliver, often for legitimate reasons.  Make meetings worthwhile and keep action lists.  Respect your team members at all times.

Utilising the team  Identify work packets and ‘man-hours’.  Set up a communication structure  Identify key administrative roles and be prepared to reward them  Keep social activities out of project meetings, but do consider having a social.  Utilise every member of the team and create an atmosphere in which everybody feels part of the ‘company’

How to Brainstorm (or thought shower) We are not all extroverts, So…  Appoint a scribe with a ‘flip chart’  Sit around a table.  Start with one person and go round clockwise.  Each person is allowed free expression, with no judgement. They can also pass.  Suggestions are recorded.  After a few circuits try to embellish the points already made.  Etc.

Useful resources for team working  http://www.cases.bham.ac.uk http://www.cases.bham.ac.uk  Video Arts series –Meetings Bloody Meetings –More Bloody Meetings

Peer Assessment  Peer assessment will be applied to the team- based reports and presentations.  All students submit an individual review.  Address the potential conflict of priorities.  Peer assessment should be evidence- based –SO KEEP RECORDS!
