Brownfields Remediation Brief Overview

Examples of Course Topics  Standards  Toxicology  Chemistry  Respiratory Protection  PPE  Decon  Monitoring  Sampling  Confined Space  Hazard Recognition  Excavations  Safe Work Practices  Site Control  Medical Surveillance

Hazardous Material Legislation hazardous waste EPA defines hazardous waste as “a hazardous substance that has no commercial value”

Factors Affecting Human Response to Chemical Exposure  Toxic substances  Route of exposure  Chemical dose  Individual sensitivity  Interaction with other chemicals

Chemical Awareness  Hazardous substances are used in business and industry. A basic knowledge of the following is required by OSHA: Chemical hazard classes Chemical terms Basic chemical hazard awareness

Quarter MaskHalf Mask Full Facepiece Mouthpiece/Nose Clamp Air Purifying Respirators (APR)

Respiratory Protection Equipment Atmosphere - Supplying Respirators SAR continuous flow

Site-Specific HASP  For safety of workers protective methods must be identified  A model can be utilized to help recognize hazards involved in each task performed at the waste site Job Safety Analysis - Task specific

Other Site Hazards  Heavy equipment  PPE  Power tools  Lifting and moving drums/containers  Slips, trips, falls  Excavation hazards

General Requirements 29 CFR 1910.132  PPE must be provided, used, and maintained.  PPE must be adequate.  All PPE must be of safe design and construction.  Employer must assess the workplace to determine hazards.  Damaged or defective equipment must not be used.  Employers must provide training.

Prior to Entering a Confined Space  All personnel have been trained  Proper permit has been issued  Appropriate PPE is in place and utilized  OSHA’s procedures are in effect

Safe Work Practices  Openings  Stairs  Ladders  Scaffolds

Tools and Heavy Equipment  Proper maintenance  Regular inspection  Safe work procedures
