1 Hope Survey Results Wolf Creek 2013

2 What is the Hope Survey? A way to analyze a school looking at more than just academic achievement and test results. Looks at the following factors: Engagement Autonomy Belongingness Goal Orientation Academic Press

3 Engagement - meaning Engagement refers to the student's behavior and attitudes in school. Being behaviorally engaged, for example, means that a student works hard, concentrates, and pays attention. An engaged learner will obtain a deeper understanding of the material and retain the knowledge for a longer period of time.

4 Engagement scores (-10 to 10)
Behavioral: 2012: 1.64 2013: 2.34 Emotional 2012: 1.02 2013: 1.70 In spring 2013 our scores here considered moderate. Both show improvement which is very good.

5 Autonomy - meaning Autonomy refers to the opportunity for self- management and choice. High-autonomy situations stimulate student motivation, engagement, and persistence, which in turn results in higher levels of achievement.

6 Autonomy scores (1 to 7) 2012: 5.54 2013: 5.79
2012: 5.54 2013: 5.79 Our scores in this category are very good and we showed an increase from 2012 to 2013. Students at Wolf Creek feel a strong sense of autonomy.

7 Belongingness - meaning
Belongingness (sometimes referred to as relatedness) is a measure of the depth and quality of the interpersonal relationships in an individual's life. Positive peer relations have been found to influence school competence, involvement in the classroom, and academic achievement. Positive teacher-student relationships are also important in that they can enhance student motivation, engagement, coping with failure, and achievement.

8 Belongingness scores (1 to 5)
Advisor Academic 2012: 4.09 2013: 4.23 These scores are considered good, as is the increase. Advisor Personal 2012: 3.81 2013: 3.94 These scores are considered very good. Wolf Creek students feel a strong personal connection to their advisor or learning manager.

9 Belongingness (1 to 5) Continued
Peer Academic 2012: 2.78 2013: 2.81 This area is considered to need improvement Peer Personal 2012: 3.10 2013: 2.91 This area is our only decrease and thus considered to need significant improvement.

10 Goal Orientation - meaning
A goal orientation represents the reasons behind a student's effort to achieve. A learning or mastery or task goal orientation represents a desire to achieve purely for the purpose of obtaining knowledge and increasing skills. In contrast, a performance goal orientation represents the desire to succeed in comparison to others.

11 Goal Orientation (1 to 5) Task Mastery 2012: 3.78 2013: 4.02
Our scores in this area are considered excellent. Performance 2012: 2.18 2013: 2.07 Our scores in this area are considered very good, a low score being the goal.

12 Academic press - meaning
Academic press is a consistently high expectation on the part of the teachers that students will do their best work. The emphasis is on a press for understanding, rather than a press for performance. School environments high in academic press have been found to encourage more effective student learning strategies and greater levels of student achievement.

13 Academic Press (1 to 5) 2012: 3.60 2013: 3.77 Our scores in this area are considered very good and have shown improvement.

14 Overall Hope - meaning Hope reflects individuals' perceptions regarding their ability to clearly conceptualize their goals, develop the specific strategies to reach those goals. A goal can be anything that an individual desires to experience, create, obtain, accomplish, or become.

15 Hope scores (up to 64) 2012: 48.14 2013: 48.97 These are considered moderate, borderline high hope scores. There are areas where Wolf Creek is very strong, and areas where we can improve.

16 Strategies to promote hope
The following are a few things Wolf Creek already does in our strong categories

20 Areas where we can improve
Peer belongingness: Provide student role models Encourage sense of community within the school Provide opportunities for students to connect both academically and personally
