1 December 12-13  Objective –  Develop an understanding of Napoleon's rise to power  Form an opinion on whether Napoleon is good or bad for France  Agenda  Who is Napoleon – The basics  Self Directed Work – readings and Timeline  Napoleon’s Letters  Begin Writing paper  HW – None, but by the end of the week you need to complete the readings and a rough draft of your paper

2 Napoleon  Born in Corsica, a Mediterranean Island, in 1769  Joined the French army after going to military school, would side with the revolutionaries when the French Revolution came  Why is it ironic that the supports the revolution as a member of the army?

3 Continued  Gains an important role in the military, eventually earning the rank of Captain during the revolution  He is considered a genius based on his ability to devise military tactics  Napoleon’s leadership skills in the military will translate to him gaining power in the government

4 Napoleon Gains Power  Napoleon used his military position to increase his power, leading troops into Italy and gaining victory before losing battles in Egypt  By this time (1799) the people of France are frustrated with the continued ineffectiveness of their government (the revolution is 10 years old) and are looking for leadership  Napoleon uses the desire of the French people to sweep into power, and by 1800 he is the elected as the leader of France and is effectively a dictator  The question that remains is: Was Napoleon a product of the revolution and democratic ideals or a return to a single ruler?

5 The rest of the work  For the rest of today, you will work at your own pace  Pull this PowerPoint up off of my website and work to complete all of the tasks it has  What you don’t finish today, you will finish Wednesday/Thursday  Wednesday I will introduce your paper prompts and we will start the writing process in the second half of class.

6 Textbook  Chapter 23 Section 3 (663-667)  Read and take notes, creating a basic timeline of Napoleon’s rise to power  Answer questions 2-6

7 With your textbook and netbook  Using the Napoleon timeline as a starting point, Make a timeline in word of major events from the beginning of the French Revolution until Napoleon becomes emperor of France  Things to include –  major government shifts  Wars or battles  Dates of important arrests/executions  Have at least 20 things  When you have completed the timeline, answer these questions with lists that have at least 3 facts for each  Why is the French Revolution good for the people of France  You will turn this in to turnitin.com

9 Reading Napoleon's Letters 1.Which of the Philosophers does Napoleon seem to be following? 2.How do you think the censoring of newspapers, plays, books, and sermons aided Napoleon? 3.What advantages are there for France with a strong leader like Napoleon compared to the weak King or ineffective government?
