4 I. The Rise of Napoleon A. Napoleon was a great military commander who rose through the military ranks and eventually earned command of an army training to invade England B. He helped to set up a new government after the overthrow of the Directory

5 I. The Rise of Napoleon C. He made himself consul, which gave him control of the military. Where have we heard of consul before?

6 II. Napoleon: the Emperor A. With control of the army, Napoleon was able to crown himself emperor of France 1. The French people supported Napoleon because they believed he would bring stability to the empire. 2. With this action, France is no longer a republic

7 B. Created a civil code which guaranteed citizens such things as religious freedom, equality, and the abolishment of feudalism. Also known as Napoleonic Code II. Napoleon: the Emperor

8 III. Napoleon: the Warrior A. Napoleon’s army defeated armies from Russia and Austria B. In the early 1800s, most of Europe was controlled by Napoleon 1. He appointed many of his relatives to rule over conquered territories

13 IV. The Fall of Napoleon A. In 1812, Napoleon invaded Russia B. Since Russia is such a large country, Napoleon’s army was unable to defeat it. Napoleon lost 300,000 troops in Russia C. Knowing Napoleon’s army was weakened, other nations rose up to fight him

14 D. With a weakened army, Napoleon could not hold off attacks from other nations E. Eventually, Napoleon was sent into exile and the French monarchy was restored F. However, Napoleon soon returned and regained control of his army IV. The Fall of Napoleon

15 G. Other nations in Europe promised to defeat Napoleon again H. In 1815, Napoleon attacked British and Prussian troops in Waterloo I. Napoleon was defeated and sent into exile again, where he stayed until his death IV. The Fall of Napoleon

16 One of the main effects of Napoleon was that European empires would begin to join together to stop an imperialistic and aggressive military leaders We will see this with Otto von Bismarck in WWI and Hitler in WWII IV. The Fall of Napoleon
