Starter: wb page 74, Q5b, Karl has a mass of 80 Kg and jumps with a velocity of 3 m/s east. Boat A has a mass of 100 Kg. What is its velocity just after Karl jumps? 1.Work out the momentum before the jump (of the whole system, boat + karl) Momentum before jump = 100Kg x0 + 80Kg x 0= 0 kg m/s

Momentum before jump = momentum after jump Momentum after jump = momentum boat + momentum karl =(100 Kg x v) + (80 Kg x 3m/s) 0 kg m/s = (100 Kg x v) + (80 Kg x 3m/s) v= -(80 kg x v) / 100 = - 2.4 m/s

Karl has a mass of 80 Kg and jumps with a velocity of 3 m/s east. Boat A has a mass of 100 Kg. Boat B has a mass of 112 kg. Calculate boat B’s velocity after Karl lands in it. Momentum before Karl lands = momentum after Karl lands. Work out momentum before.. 2. Momentum before Karl lands = momentum of the boat + momentum of Karl = (112 kg x 0) + (80 Kg x 3m/s) = 240 Kg m/s

Momentum after Karl landed = (112 + 80) v Momentum before… = momentum after…= 240 Kg m/s 240 kg m/s = (112 + 80) v V= 240/192 = + 1.25m/s

Series circuits L.O.:  What can we say about the current and potential difference for components in a series circuit?  How can be find the total resistance of a series circuit?

Homework due on 12 th November: workbook pages 82-83.

As you watch this clip, pay attention to: 1)Differences between a series and parallel circuit. 2)What happens to I, V and R

For components in series: o The current is the same in each component o The potential differences add to give the total potential difference o The resistance add to give the total resistance

11-Sep-15 circuit symbols

11-Sep-15 symbols review

11-Sep-15 an electrical circuit A current will only flow if there is: a supply of electrical energy ( an e.m.f.) & a complete circuit.

11-Sep-15 a series circuit A series circuit is one where the current has “no choice” as to which “path” to follow. There are no junctions in a series circuit.

11-Sep-15 switches in a series circuit A single switch will control all the lamps in a series circuit.

11-Sep-15 adding lamps to a series circuit Adding extra lamps to a series circuit reduces their brightness.
