Sea-ing the Connection “Fish Food is Brain Food” or tips to remember You can use the fact that percent means “out of 100” to rewrite a percent as a fractionYou can use the fact that percent means “out of 100” to rewrite a percent as a fraction To write a decimal as a percent, move the decimal point two places to the rightTo write a decimal as a percent, move the decimal point two places to the right To write a percent as a decimal, move the decimal point two places to the leftTo write a percent as a decimal, move the decimal point two places to the leftVocabulary Fraction – a number in the form a/b Ex – 2/3 Percent – a ratio comparing a number to 100 Ex – 29% = 29/100 Terminating decimal – a decimal number that ends Ex – 2.33 Repeating decimal - a decimal that repeats a pattern of digits ex -.121212… Main Menu

Changing a Fraction to a Decimal There are two methods to write a fraction as a decimal. Method 1: Find an equivalent fraction with a denominator of ten, 100, or any other power of ten. Ex – 3 (x 4) = 12 =.12 25 (x 4) 100 Method 2: Because a fraction indicates division, the numerator of the fraction can be divided by the denominator. divided (Sea-ing the connection: Two-thirds of a pizza means a whole pizza divided into three equal parts.) 0. 12 Ex 3 25 3. 00 or 3 ÷ 20 =.012 20 Main Menu

Now, It’s your turn to turn fractions into decimals. Complete the conversions below on your notebook paper with either method. Check your answers by clicking on the fish after you’ve finished all eight problems. 1. 8/252. 34/125 3. 3/84. 2/3 5. 7/406. 7/8 7. 8/11 8. 15/25 Main Menu

Changing a Fraction to a Percent To express a fraction as a percent, first change the fraction to a decimal(*helpful hint if you’ve forgotten how*) and then move the decimal two places to the right and add the percent sign.(*helpful hint if you’ve forgotten how*) 4/5 = 4 ÷ 5 =.8 =.8. 0. = 80% Now, it’s your turn to change a fraction to a percent. 16 Main Menu Convert the following fractions to percents on your notebook paper. Check your answers by clicking on the fish after you’ve finished all five problems. 1.8/252. 5/6 3. 7/84. 1/20 5. 9/1000

8/25 = 32% Main Menu

5/6 = 83 1/3%

Main Menu 7/8 = 87.5%

Main Menu 1/20 = 5%

Main Menu 9/1000 = 0.9%

Changing Decimals to Fractions To express a decimal as a fraction, first write the decimal with a denominator in a power of 10 indicated by the final digit of the decimal. Then simplify the fraction. Ex – 0.45 45 (÷ 5) = 9 100 (÷ 5) = 20 Ex -.8 8 = 4 10 5 Now, it’s your turn to change a decimal to a fraction. Click on the next button to continue Main Menu

Convert the following decimals to fractions on your notebook paper. Check your answers by clicking on the fish after you’ve finished all five problems. 1.0.852. 0.55 3. 0.6254. 0.83 5. 0.272

Main Menu.85 = 17/20

Main Menu.55 = 11/20

Main Menu 0.625 = 5/8

Main Menu 0.83 = 83/100

Main Menu 0.272 = 34/125

Changing Decimals to Percents To express a decimal as a percent, remember that you can write the decimal as a fraction with a denominator of 100. And you also remember that percent is expressed as a number “out of 100”. So, the fraction can be written as a percent. Ex -.75 means 75/100 which is the same as 75% Ex – 0.125 means 125/1000, which reduced to a number over 100, is 12.5/100 which is 12.5% Wanna get hooked on a quick method to changing a decimal to a percent? Just remember to move the decimal two places to the right and add your percent sign! Ex -.8 =.8. 0. = 80% Now, it’s your turn to change a decimal to a percent. Click on the next button to continue. 30 Convert the following decimals to a percent on your notebook paper. Check your answers by clicking on the fish after you’ve finished all five problems. 1.0.1952. 0.07 3. 0.03344. 0.55 5. 0.01

Main Menu.195 = 19.5%

Main Menu.07 = 7%

Main Menu.0334 = 3.34%

Main Menu.55 = 55%

Main Menu.01 = 1%

Changing Percents to Decimals To express a percent as a decimal, you can divide the percent by 100 and remove the percent sign. Ex – 72% = 72 which is 72 ÷ 100 which is.72 100 Ex – 37.5% = 37.5 which is 37.5 ÷ 100 which is 0.375 100 Wanna get hooked on a quick method to changing a percent to a decimal? Just remember to move the decimal two places to the left and remove your percent sign! Ex – 25% =. 2 5 % =.25 Main Menu

Convert the following Percents to decimals on your notebook paper. Check your answers by clicking on the fish after you’ve finished all five problems. 1.6%2. 190% 3. 37 ¾%4. 40% 5. 100%

Main Menu 6% =.06

Main Menu 190% = 1.9

Main Menu 37 ¾% =.3475

Main Menu 40% =.4

Main Menu 100% = 1

Changing Percents to Fractions To express a percent as a fraction, write a fraction with a denominator of 100. (Remember, a percent is a number “out of 100.”) Then simplify the fraction into lowest terms. Ex – 65% = 65 (÷ 5, which is the greatest common factor) = 13 100 (÷ 5) 20 Here’s a bit more challenging example; simplifying into lowest terms takes a few more steps. Ex – 16 ½% = 16 ½ = 16 ½ ÷ 100 = 33 ÷ 100 = 33 x 1 = 33 100 2 2 100 200 Main Menu

Convert the following Percents to fractions on your notebook paper. Check your answers by clicking on the fish after you’ve finished all five problems. 1.80%2. 32% 3. 75%4. 12 ½% 5. 15%

Main Menu 80% = 4/5

Main Menu 32% = 8/25

Main Menu 75% = 3/4

Main Menu 12 ½% = 1/8

Main Menu 15% = 3/20
