1 Unit 1: Conversions Decimals, fractions, and percents are all ways to express a part of a whole. It is important to remember that all % are out of a total of 100. Sometimes you need to convert between these to fit a certain situation. For example, when cooking you would use fractions.

2 Changing Fractions to Decimals
Change 3/4 to a decimal. There are two ways to do this. You can make a fraction equivalent to x/10 , x/100 , x/1,000 IF you know this easily in your head. You can divide the numerator by the denominator.

3 Change each fraction to a decimal.
13/20 19/25 1 5/8 4/9 1/6

4 Changing Decimals to Fractions
“WRITE IT LIKE YOU SAY IT!!!” Write 0.95 as a fraction. Write it as a fraction like you say it. Ex: ninety-five hundredths = Reduce if necessary.

5 Change each decimal to a fraction.
0.9 0.09 4.5 7.75 5.25

6 Changing Decimals to Percents
Ex: Change 0.23 to a percent. Move the decimal point two places to the right. Put the percent sign (%) on the right side of the number.

7 Change each decimal to a percent.
0.25 0.095 0.6 0.05 5.25

8 Changing Percents to Decimals Ex: Change 75% to a decimal.
Move the decimal point two places to the left. Drop the percent sign (%).

9 Change each percent to a decimal.
76% 90% 6% 125% 100%

10 Changing Percents to Fractions Ex: Change 5% to a fraction.
Change the percent to a decimal. 5% = 2. Change the decimal to a fraction and simplify. 0.05= =

11 Change each percent to a fraction.
12% 2% 58% 43% 65%

12

13 Changing Fractions to Percents Ex: Change 3/10 to a percent.
Change the fraction to a decimal. 3/10 = 2. Change the decimal to a percent. 0.3 = %

14 Change each fraction to a percent.
43/100 7/10 3/5 1/4 1/2 No work shown.

15 Fraction Decimal Percent 3% 0.3 3 0.06
Fill in the FDP Chart Fraction Decimal Percent 3% 0.3 3 0.06

16 Fill in the FDP Chart. Fraction Decimal Percent 0.09 9/10 900% 0.08

17 Fill in the FDP Chart. Fraction Decimal Percent 1/50 0.5 5 1/5

18 Comparing Fractions, Decimals, and Percents
i.e.: ¾ _____ 50% <, >, or = 1.) Convert to same form 2.) Compare the two: greater than, less than, or equal

19 Practice: Compare: 3/5 _____ 60% Compare: ¾ _____ 0.77

20 Ordering and Comparing Fractions, Decimals, and Percents
Example: Order the following from Least to Greatest: ¼ % (put in percent form) 1) Convert all to common form 2.) Order in original form ¼ = 0.25 = 25% 0.8 = 80% 50% = 50% ANSWER ¼, 50%, 0.8

21 Practice: Order from Least to Greatest (in decimal form) 2/5 0.6 55%
Order from Least to Greatest (in fraction form) ¼ %

22 More Practice Order each set from least to greatest. Show ALL conversions. 0.66, 2/3 , 60% 0.31, 28%, 7/20 76%, 7/8 , 0.8 Order from greatest to least. Show ALL conversions. 2 1/2, 2.4, 212% 5 3/8, 5.5, 560% 6 14/25, 640%, 6.5

23 Finding a Pattern You may also be given the beginning of a pattern and have to fill in the rest of it. F, D, F, D, ____, ____, _____, ______ Whatever the pattern, you have to change what they give you to be in the same form so you can see what the pattern is. But, you have to make sure you fill in the pattern in the correct form. Must convert TWICE!

24 Example: 1/5, 0.4, 6/10, _____, ____, _____ F D F D F D Label them!

25 Practice For each pattern, find the next four numbers in the sequence. Show ALL conversions. 10.25, 10 1/2, 10.75, _________, _________, __________ 14.2, 14 2/5 , 14.6, ______, ______, ________, ________ 3.12, 3 6/25, 3.36, _______, _______, _______, ________ 3 1/8, 3.25, 3 3/8, _______, _______, _______, ________
