2011 Auditing Section’s Doctoral Consortium Panel on Career Issues Anna Gold Rotterdam School of Management Erasmus University The Netherlands

Topics Some research strategies – my suggestions Combining research with teaching Combining research with the rest of your life The European job market

Research Strategies Some suggestions.

Sole or Co-Authored? Definitely more fun working with other people than by yourself! Probably resulting in higher quality output. “Senior” or “junior” co-authors? How to find them? How to deal with problems?

Topic Identification and Method Choice: Being pragmatic Time constraints? Expertise? Avoid ‘sensitive’ topics in early career Avoid ‘sponsored’ projects in early career…

Combining Research

Combining Research with Teaching Plan your (academic) year! If possible, focus on one thing at a time! But also: during teaching prep, see if you can filter out interesting topics for research, and vice versa! Thesis supervision can be used for research!

Combining Research with the Rest of your Life Ages 25-40: Everything is supposed to happen… Accept that you can’t be at two places at the same time, and wear your “hats” to the fullest! Set your priorities…

The European Job Market

Less formalized job market. Individual applications at schools. Not all positions are necessarily advertised! Moving increasingly toward the North American system in terms of tenure arrangements, publication requirements etc. However, teaching load is typically low in the first years.

The European Job Market Excellent career opportunities for well-trained researchers (i.e., you!) Schools are aching for good candidates with North American research background and network. Most “advanced” countries: NL and UK. But also Germany, Scandinavia, Spain, France, Eastern Europe NL: Post-graduate CPA education is given by universities, providing excellent access to auditing firms Quality of life in Europe: Great social benefits Emphasis on work-life balance Culture and history

Thank you for your attention! Any questions are welcome.
