1. ISU Phase 4 – Primary Research Proposal

2. The Primary Research Proposal Phase will be handed in (along with Phase 3) as part of your final research paper worth 20% of your mark. It is to be included after the works cited page of your Secondary Research. The purpose of the Primary Research Proposal is to mimic the process of primary research that is often done in the social sciences disciplines. YOU WILL NOT ACTUALLY BE CONDUCTING THE SURVEY OR INTERVIEW.

3. Instructions/Directions: Complete the following steps for your primary research proposal – follow the same format as in phase 3 and follow the success criteria exactly. You may use personal pronouns in phase 4 because it is based on your own desired research. Each section is to be completed in proper sentence and paragraph form.

4. Title Page (APA) Same format as Phase 3 Create a title page including your name, the course, due date, and a title for your work. Include a running header. Your research proposal should have an original title that is based on your research question.

5. Rationale – Identify which of your 3 arguments you are going to use as the focus fro your Primary Research method. Specifically explain what you are researching and what you are looking to research further using either a survey or interview process.

6. Methodology – Identify whether you are going to use a survey or interview. Explain your choice. SURVEY: High number of respondents Short, concise questions – Multiple choice, short fill in the blanks, scale/ranking questions Data gathering leads to statistical analysis and trends Quantitative INTERVIEW: Small number of respondents Able to ask questions of clarification – Explanatory questions Data gathering leads to fuller understanding of interviewee’s personal experience Qualitative

7. Target Group – Provide details of your sample group (intended audience) would if you were going to conduct your research and why they are an appropriate sample group. Explain all factors that apply - be specific – explain age group, ethnicity, gender, education, economic status etc.

8. Survey or Interview Questions – Your primary research questions should address the appropriate issues – make sure that your questions are directly related to the topic/research question you have chosen. Include a copy of your survey or interview process in your final research paper.

12. Example of Interview Questions If a person has attempted suicide or engaged in self-harm behaviour(s), ask questions to assess circumstances surrounding the event(s): – What happened in your previous attempts to self-harm or take your life? – What led up to it? – Were you using alcohol or other substances? – What method did you use? – Sometimes people have many reasons for harming themselves in addition to wanting to die. What might have been some of your reasons for self-harm or suicide? – How severe were your injuries? – What were your thoughts just before you harmed yourself? – What did you anticipate would be the outcome of your self-harm or suicide attempt? – Did you think you would die? – What did you think would be the response of others to your self-harm or suicide?
