UNIT 9 BATTERIES There are many different types, but none of them should be put into the normal waste, because they contain highly-contaminating toxic elements, such as mercury and other heavy metals. They must be placed in: - special containers which can be found in some towns and cities - battery boxes found in some shops - the nearest recycling centre When batteries are recycled, some of the heavy metals can be reused. 5. UNIT 9 OIL Used cooking oil must never be poured down the sink, it should be put into plastic bottles to be recycled. As well as blocking the pipes, oil contaminates the water and it is very difficult to get rid of. Bottles filled with used oil must be put into the specific containers or taken to the nearest recycling centre. UNIT 9 MOBILE PHONES AND ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES Mobile phones must be put into special containers or taken to mobile phone shops or a recycling centre because the majority of their components can be recycled.
