2 HOW WE GAIN STUDENT INTEREST IN ENGINEERING We utilize several strategies to recruit and maintain students in engineering. Over the 2009 -2010 School year, we participated in many activities that raised the community awareness of: “Who We Are” and “What We Do” Here is a snapshot!

3 SUCCESSFUL STRATEGIES Middle and Elementary schools recruitment (Grades 4-8) Students are the primary recruiters Hands-on classes and activities Middle and Elementary Student Events Coast Guard/ NSBE Fun Day Saturday Academy Back To School Bash Wednesday Tutoring Sessions for Middle and High School Student Organizations Workshops & Competitions Community Service Annual Awards Banquet Job Shadowing Parental Involvement

4 SCHOOL VISITS Middle and Elementary students see older students in a career path they may choose to follow. The students describe their personal reflections dealing with engineering and the many competitions and accomplishments they’ve had within this field. One-on-one interaction with teachers and students Share upcoming events Disseminate information Students know what to take 9 th grade year

8 FUN ACTIVITIES FOR ALL AGES ROBOTICS CLUB 1 st Place in Design in SCSU Robotics Competition AFTER-SCHOOL TUTORING IN MATH & SCIENCE YES We do have fun!

10 National Society of Black Engineers Teens for Jeans Helped homeless youth in local community by donating 255 pair of gently used jeans Nike “Re-Use a Shoe” Campaign Rubber soles recycled and used for athletic surfaces Habitat for Humanity Helped move and donate Christmas gifts Community Service

11 National Society of Black Engineers Chapter of the Year – 2010-2011 Featured on the Cover of the International Bridge Magazine 118 members Highest % APEX Members (GPA 3.0+) Try-Math-A-Lon Region 2 Winners TMAL World - 5 th Place TMAL USA – 3 rd Place Three NSBE Golden Torch Scholarship Winners Save-Our-Kids Scholarship Winner Awards Banquet

12 NOBCChE National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers 10 students selected to attend by SCSU 1890 Science Bowl Science Fair Tutoring by Administrators and Teachers
