We have been waiting for a scheme like this for years! Gail Hughes Brasshouse Language Centre

We teach 30 languages … and we urgently need a standardised assessment scheme which covers all languages – from entry level to level 5. Gail Hughes Brasshouse Language Centre

This is a new way of looking at courses and qualifications. It allows language learners to measure what they can do at all stages of language learning including the very early ones. Cecilia Rojas Leicester Adult Education College

Of course, Asset is the first languages qualification to be available in junior schools. It’s given the pupils a real sense of achievement, and the bite-size format has been really motivational. Liz Ellis AST Bournville Junior School

Build a unique languages profile via separate assessment Listening Speaking Reading Writing

I introduced Asset Languages to the club so that the students could gain recognition for their extra- curricular efforts and it has become a real success story for the centre. Siân Moore Burnham Copse Junior School

The can-do statements: Speaking Breakthrough Stage Grade 1I can say/repeat a few words and short simple phrases. Grade 2 I can answer simple questions and give basic information. Grade 3 I can ask and answer simple questions and talk about my interests. Preliminary Stage Grade 4 I can take part in a simple conversation and I can express my opinions.

The great thing about Asset Languages is that it actually recognises what pupils can do, not what they’ve learnt on a course or programme of study…..we haven’t had to alter the way we teach languages in order to offer the qualification. Liz Ellis Bournville Junior School

Assessment – Stages and Grades Languages Ladder Stages NQF Mastery Stage - Grades 16-17Level 5 Proficiency Stage - Grades 13-15Level 4 Advanced Stage - Grades 10-12Level 3 Intermediate Stage - Grades 7-9Level 2 Preliminary Stage - Grades 4-6Level 1 Breakthrough Stage - Grades 1-3Entry Level

The immediacy of being able to achieve a certificate for tasks they have learned in class gives them the confidence to improve and advance with their language skills. Siân Moore Cedars’ School

The new qualifications are definitely the way forward – I think their flexibility will encourage people to try new languages, as they can take the steps they want, when they want to. Cecilia Rojas Leicester Adult Education College
