7 CURRENT DEMAND ON SEAFARERS
Shortage of Seafarers BIMCO/ISF Manpower 2005 Updates, the world will be facing shortfall of 27,000 seafarers (officer level) by the year 2015. BIMCO – The Baltic International Maritime Council – world largest private shipping organization with 2,720 members. More than 50% of the officers employed on Malaysian flag foreign going vessels are expatriates. Currently, there are about 4,000 Malaysian Registered Ship. Opportunity in Tertiary Education in Malaysia Form 5 Form 6 TOTAL 2009 407,594 49,802 457,396 2010 467,800 56,136 523,936 Notes: Placement for students in local higher learning institutes (private and public) are est. 211,532 Malaysia needs 30% of its labor force with tertiary education to achieve the characteristics of first-world talent base

Entry Requirements - Diploma in Nautical Studies Entry Requirements : SPM Examination with strong credits in : Bahasa Malaysia English Language Mathematics Physics Male or Female Single Age 17 – 25 years old Minimum height of 158cm and weight of 48kg for male applicants (BMI: 18.5 – 24.9) Minimum height of 155cm and weight of 42kg for female applicants (BMI: 18.5 – 24.9) Mentally and physically fit Not colour blind No visual aids (for DNS only).

Recruitment Exercise is held twice a year in :- January (application using SPM Trial Exam Results) April (application using actual SPM Exam Results) Short-listing is based on academic achievements and co-curriculum activities. Objectives To enhance the education and training of merchant navy officers To improve the cadets’ and officers’ performance and competency to ensure the safety and reliability of operations onboard ships.

Value Based Assessment Enhanced Marine related Project Paper Structured Interview GPA <2.70 Compulsory Tutorial Practical Competency Check GPA <2.70 Compulsory Tutorial Passed all papers before going for shipboard training Eye vision (STCW A-I/9) Entry – to reflect the pre-entry assessment that is in place, provide certain level of barrier so that only the eligible will be allowed to enter. To conduct study for the development of student profiling matrix for trending of the potential good student. The interview process to include the evaluation of communication and conversation skill. The induction programme to include the measurement of students resilience and teamwork. Semester 1 – Practical & Oral assessment to cover basic element of bridge procedures such as proper communication etiquettes and behaviour while on bridge, at the same time proper reporting procedures, other include basic seamanship such as personal safety and rope work, and collision regulations. For the engineering, the demonstration of workshop and laboratory work. Checklist on the evaluation and assessment of skill competency will be developed Student must pass the practical and oral assessment beside other assessment that are already in place. Semester 2 Same as in Semester 1. Need further study on the referral exam for those who failed in the semester 2 exam.
