Future Families – A Three tiered Approach Bounce & Rhyme (0 – 3 years)  Help improve children’s literacy, numeracy, and communication skills  Build vocabulary and language acquisition  Assist understanding of child development  Promote parenting skills and prevent social isolation of parents

Future Families – A Three tiered Approach Toddlers Tales (3 – 5 years)  Same intended outcomes as Bounce & Rhyme, but targeted at older age group  Incorporates physical activity to address growing concerns around childhood obesity and inactive lifestyles

Future Families – A Three tiered Approach Group Triple P  Managed by Glasgow Life and co-facilitated by NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde

Context  Child population in Glasgow (i.e. those residents aged 15 years and under) is 97,236 – representing 16.4% of the city’s total population  28,251 children are aged 0-3 years (i.e. 29.1% of the total child population)  12,382 are aged 4-5 years (12.7%)  38.4% of Glasgow’s child population is considered ‘vulnerable’

Glasgow Child Population

Importance of the Home Learning Environment (HLE)  Influence of HLE on cognitive development (Roulstone et al, 2011; DfE, 2011)  Children from poorer backgrounds less likely to experience rich HLE (JRF, 2010)  Impact of parent-child activities such as reading and singing (Bradshaw, 2011)

Engaging Vulnerable Families  Social networks & group dynamics (Withall, Jago & Fox, 2011)  Initial engagement / communication mechanisms (Vincent et al., 2009, cited by Ben-Galim, 2011)  Formal vs. informal support (Mabelis & Marryat, 2011)

Tailoring Support: Future Families  Bounce & Rhyme Times and Toddlers Tales as pathways to accessing Triple P  Critical success factors:  Range of communication mechanisms  Non-threatening setting  Establishment of rapport & continuity of service

Future developments  Increase staff awareness  Develop additional programme for 3-5 year olds  Targeted programmes  Taster sessions / information points  Volunteers/Mentors
