Tubingen, October 9th, 20074 GWA net: Objectives GWA is a networking activity part of the ILIAS project and focus on GW antenna Objectives of this network - Increase the level of European coordination in the field - Help the enhancement of the performance of existing detectors - Prepare the future of this discipline in Europe - Open existing facilities to more people from more countries - Help the structuring an European GW research community A five years project - started in April 2004 - will end in March 2009 GWA Budget: 550 kEuros / ~200 scientists in ~35 labs….. Why doing it ? A) Opportunity to have more coordination in Europe (and indeed it did happen) B) GW experimental community enters the EU world - more funds expected to come via the EU in some future - hope to have a design study funded by the EU in FP7

Tubingen, October 9th, 20076 ET: Einstein Telescope ! Design study proposed to the EU last May Thank to the GWA working group lead by Michele and Harald First step of selection passed successfully More info this afternoon Rüdiger, ‘85

Tubingen, October 9th, 20077 GWA net: Contents Develop the exchange of information on items of common interest GWA activity based on three working groups: - WG1: Detectors commissioning and characterization (H.Grote, G.Losurdo) WG2: Joint operation of detectors and network data analysis (G.Guidi, I.S.Heng) WG3: An European strategy for future detectors (H.Lueck, M.Punturo) - Each working group typically consists of at least 10 experts - Two chairpersons per working group (task leaders) Beside working group activities: Regular meetings involving the responsible of the main projects and research poles (Cascina May 2004, Prague Feb 2005, Perugia Sep 2005, Paris Jan 2006, Paris Feb 2007) Annual general meeting open to all participants (common with STREGA) (Orsay 2004, Palma de Mallorca 2005, London 2006, Tubingen today) Common meetings with theorists (part of another network inside ILIAS) (Paris Jan 2006, Tubingen tomorrow) One institution in charge of the budget administration and WEB site hosting (EGO) - http://www.ego-gw.it/ILIAS-GW/

Tubingen, October 9th, 20078 GWA net: Tools A small budget (550 kE in five years) to: Organize meetings / support participation to meetings - past and forthcoming meetings available at http://www.ego-gw.it/ILIAS-GW/ - always available: agenda and slides. Often also minutes. Support short visits of scientists from one lab to another - infos available at http://www.ego-gw.it/ILIAS-GW/VisitorProgramme.html Finance a very few fellowships - to support important network activities relevant to WG’s activities Trigger/finance outreach initiatives - not originally foreseen, ideas welcome

Tubingen, October 9th, 20079 Reports and Financing t0 = April 2004 t0 + n yr + 0.5 yr : mid term report (next one to be provided soon) - Internal scientific report provided to the ILIAS coordinator (CEA) - Each 3 months list of expenses sent to CEA t0 + n yr : annual report - Scientific and financial report sent to EU (via CEA) - Financial needs for the following 18 months t0 + n yr + x : pre-financing - so far: July 2004, Feb 2006, Feb 2007 (x can be as long as 6-8 months!) ILIAS underwent a mid-term review performed by the EU - Very positive result

Tubingen, October 9th, 200712 Last year activities Organize meetings / support participation to meetings - Four WG1 meetings (Cascina, Hannover, Geneva, Cascina) - One WG2 meeting (London) - Three WG3 meetings (Cascina, Paris, Amsterdam) - Several teleconferences for ET proposal preparation - Support participation of GEO scientists to Virgo+ review - Support participation to ApPEC meeting - Stochastic background workshop (Nice) - One GWA executive board meeting (Paris) - Participation to ILIAS annual general meeting (Chambery) Support short visits of scientists from one lab to another - Visit of a GEO scientist to the Virgo site - Participation of GEO scientists to Advanced Virgo Meetings Finance a very few fellowships - Fellowship to work on the AURIGA-ROG-Virgo joint data analysis (L. Baggio, ended in Sep 2006) - Fellowship to work on the GEO-Virgo joint commissioning effort (J. Smith, ended in Mar 2007)

Tubingen, October 9th, 200713 GWA net: Plans Continue support to the meetings of the joint GEO-Virgo commissioning group - very interesting meetings involving young researchers and expert commissioners - it would be worth enlarging the publicity around these meetings Intensify relationship with theorists and other astronomical communities - some of the budget already used for common meetings with theorists - more can be done to support relationships with other astronomical communities (proposals from WG2 are welcome) Support the start of ET - possible within the WG3 activities and budget Launch a call for proposals for outreach initiatives Contribute to the preparation of the ILIAS-NEXT proposal Forthcoming meetings: - Next WG1 meeting in Hannover during the LIGO-Virgo meeting -ILIAS annual general meeting in Spain (TBC): end of February
