3  The rigor of items has been increased because of new standards put in place (ELA)/reorganization of previous standards (Math).  A four-hour time limit has been established for STAAR, as opposed to TAKS which was untimed.  Third grade will take a lunch break half way through the testing time.  Students will now be marking answers on a separate answer document. Significant Differences with STAAR

5 APPLYING BLOOM’S 1.KNOWLEDGE……Recall the items used by Goldilocks in the three bears. 2. COMPREHENSION…….. Explain why Goldilocks liked Baby Bear’s chair. 3. APPLICATION……Demonstrate what Goldilocks would use if she came into your house. 4.ANALYSIS……Compare the story to reality. What incidents could not have happened? 5. SYNTHESIS…… Imagine how the story would be different if it were “Goldilocks and the Three Fishes. 6. EVALUATION……Judge whether Goldilocks was bad or good, and be prepare to defend your answer.

7 TAKSSTAAR Six objectives tested all the TEKS (skills) Five categories test most of the TEKS…the sixth objective is now embedded throughout the test About 45 questionsAbout 50 questions Questions would often test one TEK (skill) at a time Each question could test several TEKS (skills) at once Questions could be solved in one or two steps Questions now often have more than two steps (multi-step), or require working backwards Some questions were computation with not as much reading From what we know, all questions involve more complex reading (due to multi-step) Old vs. New Math

11 * Check graded papers as they come home and go over challenging work. * Have your child do math homework independently FIRST. * THEN check over homework and help your child correct mistakes. *Continue to practice all basic math skills at home.
