4 STAARy Details 4 hour time limit Reading – Emphasis on critical analysis (inferences) – 46 Questions Math/Science – More open-ended (griddable) items – 75% of questions will assess Content and Process Skills – Math: 50 Questions – Science: 44 Questions

5 Performance Categories STAAR Level I: Unsatisfactory Academic Performance Level II: Satisfactory Academic Performance Level III: Advanced Academic Performance

6 How are we preparing for STAAR? Tuesday/Thursday Spring Workshops STAAR Bootcamp has begun! – During this time small groups will be pulled STAAR Saturday Schools – March 22nd (Math/Reading) – April 12th (Science) – More Information will be sent home with your child Math – Daily Countdown Pages for homework – Reviewing lowest performance skills Reading – Guided reading groups with focus on refinement skills – Daily STAAR Ready Homework Science – Providing Science based reading passages – Reviewing lowest performance skills

7 Testing Dates Practice STAAR Science Benchmark – February 26th Practice STAARLite Reading/Math – March 4th STAAR - THE REAL THING! – Math: April 1st – Reading: April 2nd – Science: April 26th

8 What happens if they don’t pass the first round? Students who do NOT pass the first round: – Will be pulled for interventions – Retest on May 13th (Math) and May 14th (Reading) Students who do NOT pass the second round: – Will go to summer school – Retest on June 24th (Math) and June 25th (Reading) It is also possible that in sixth grade, students may not get an elective and be put in an extra math or reading class.

9 What can you do? Know the STAAR testing schedule and avoid making appointments on that day. Make sure your child gets adequate rest and eats a healthy breakfast on the morning of the test. Encourage your child to do his or her best and express confidence that he or she will do well. Encourage your child to read a variety of all kinds (genres) of text: books, magazines, plays, poetry, newspapers, etc. Ensure students are completing their homework and assigned science/reading passages.
