What does explain mean? Activate (or provide) Prior Knowledge Danny dropped his backpack and it made a loud sound, “Whew! My backpack weighs a ton!” exclaimed Danny. What did Danny mean? 1. His backpack weighs a ton. 2. His backpack is very heavy. CFU Students, what Danny means is that his backpack is very heavy! Sometimes people use words that do not mean exactly what they say; this is called figurative language. Today, we will explain the use of figurative language.

How do you know? A Brandon was on pins and needles before giving his speech in class. B Brandon was nervous before giving his speech in class. The tall flames reached high above the rooftop and licked the night sky. Fire can not really lick the sky. The phrase is stating that the flames of the fire were tall and wild. The house was on fire at night. The flames were tall. Why would you use the sentence with figurative language instead of the other sentence? In your own words, what is figurative language?
