TEAM DO NOW: DAY # Lesson # September 8, 2015 1. List the three primary flight control surfaces. 2. What is the purpose of the trim tab? 3. Explain the purpose and function of the aileron.

Focus Point: What are the Fuselage Structural Components? Instructional Objectives: 1. List three types of aircraft fuselages. 2. Explain the difference between full & semi monocoque. 3. Describe components of each.

I) What is the Fuselage? 1. Comes from the French word “fusele” meaning spindle shaped. 2. The main body or body portion of the airplane. 3. Supports the tail assembly. 4. Central structure to which all other components (engines, wheels, wings) of the airplane are attached. 5. Carries the payload and crew.(second main purpose).

II) Fuselage Constructions: 1. Truss Type: A. Constructed of steel tubing, carries tension and compression loads. Covered with cotton or fabric.

B. Length wise members are called longerons, carrying all the main forward and aft loads. Truss Type:

2. Monocoque Type: A) Full Monocoque: 1.Stressed skin construction, skin provides strength of structure. 2. Found on small aircraft, similar to an egg 3. It is an single shell relies on the strength of the skin for primary stresses.

B) Semimonocoque Type: 2. Constructed of alloys of aluminum and magnesium. 1. Used on most large aircraft. 3. Most of the strength is in the skin, skin is supported on a substructure of formers and stringers that give the skin its shape. *Alloy: combination of 2 or more metals.

Additional strength is provided in a semi- monocoque structure by a substructure that reinforces the skin.
