4 · Effective writers utilize the writing process to organize and strengthen all modes of writing. · Effective writers practice and use editing skills for self and peer writing evaluation. · Effective writers use conventions correctly. · Effective writers write in complete sentences varying the types such as compound and complex, and use appropriately punctuated dependent clauses. · Effective writers identify parts of speech correctly, such as nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, conjunctions, prepositions, and interjections.

5 · Effective readers analyze text to make predictions and draw conclusions; infer purpose of text. · Effective readers apply different strategies and skills to understand a variety of texts. · Effective readers can locate meanings, pronunciations, spellings, and derivations of unfamiliar words, and can use and apply new words in other contexts to improve vocabulary. · Effective readers identify and incorporate relevant, personal knowledge in order to connect with the text.

6 Targets, Strategies & Practices In the next week or two we will:  Do some activities to get to know one another and our new routines. Take Reading and Writing Benchmarks YESTERDAY AND TODAY, Towre (Mon/Tues), MAPS (Sept.1), and other assessments to find out where you stand now as a reader and a writer. Use Study Island for Some Independent Study (Not sure when) Next Week: Launch Writer’s Workshop in Periods 5 and 7* Next Week: Launch Reading Week in Periods 2 and 4* From Now Until October: Focus on Expository Reading and Writing *Reading and Writing classes will switch every week.

7 Language Arts Today We’ll Make A Plan In Writing And Then Finish The Benchmark. You Will Plan on A Separate Piece of Paper. You May Read Quietly When You Finish.

8 What is R4 ? It’s a Home Reading Program. Let’s talk about the details:  About 20 minutes a night or 140 minutes per week.  You choose the reading material.  One written response per week.  Parent signature on log.
