 This final is designed to test your ability to apply information learned in class this year and use it to create a unique, individual product.  This will be your final English assessment for the quarter and is worth 100 points TOTAL.

 You will be writing a personal letter.  Use the personal letter format, which doesn’t mean this is quick to a friend—this is a letter to an adult (not a business letter or a text message).  An example is included on the handout for your reference.

 You have two choices:  Option TWO › A soldier  Option ONE › An LHMS teacher › Aides/Paraprofessionals › Administrators › Kitchen Staff › Janitorial Staff › LHMS Coaches

 You will ultimately turn in two copies of the letter to me. › The perfect copy for the staff member or soldier due Wednesday, March 4 th  25 Points › The revised copy to be graded for additions is due Friday, March 6 th  75 Points **Your letters must be hand-written with no errors.**

 This beautifully hand-written copy of the letter should NOT have stray marks/errors on it.  This is the copy that I will give to the person you wrote it to (teacher or soldier).

› Audience-appropriate word choice. › Specific examples of why the person means something to you (not just “you’re the best” comments). › Conventions: i.e. correct format, grammar, spelling, punctuation. › Make sure you are using appropriate language and are submitting a quality piece of work. Please take your time to complete this letter to the best of your ability. You should write and edit a couple different rough drafts.  I’m expecting perfection.

 This is your opportunity to thank the one LHMS staff member who has positively influenced your life or a soldier that has protected your freedom as an American.  This should be at least one page in length. Your perfect letter will be given to the person you chose to write it to.  This is an in-class final. This is a chance to demonstrate your mastery of English skills covered throughout the year. You will be allowed in-class time to work on your letter.

 Will be a photocopy of the “perfect” letter IF you turn it in on time OR you will be re-writing it by hand. › This means your reward for turning in your perfect copy on time is LESS WORK! › You will be labeling/marking this copy with required information.

› One simple sentence (highlighted pink) › One complex sentence (highlighted yellow) › One compound sentence (highlighted orange) › One simile or metaphor (highlighted green) › One Idiom (boxed) › One use of Personification (in parenthesis) › Any ten words created from Wordly Wise packets learned during the year (circled and defined) › One example of each of the eight parts of speech (underlined and labeled)  Noun, Pronoun, Adjective, Verb, Adverb, Preposition (in a phrase), Conjunction, and Interjection.

 Some definitions are on the posters in the room.  The green Language Network books have grammar sections. › (We will provide page numbers too.)  You can use the internet on your phones.  Your peers can help you.

 You will ultimately turn in two copies of the letter to me. › The perfect copy for the staff member or soldier due Wednesday, March 4 th  25 Points › The revised copy to be graded for additions is due Friday, March 6 th  75 Points **Your letters must be hand-written with no errors.**
