5 What is an outline? A skeleton draft of your paper. Includes the main points you are going to make in each section of the essay. A filing system for the facts you found through research.

11 Main Idea = Debate Argument The main idea is an overarching argument that can be supported by evidence. It is not evidence itself (fact/quote). It is not a topic. It is not a quotation.

12 Which is the strong main idea? 1. Nuclear energy 2. In 2011, President Obama authorized a budget for new nuclear plants in the U.S. 3. My hybrid car uses as much electricity as my house air-conditioning unit. 4. Nuclear regulations have proven useful to increase safety of U.S. citizens.

13 Which is the strong main idea? 1. Plant Vogtle is planned to be built in Atlanta, Georgia. 2. Half of the nuclear power plants in the U.S. are more than 30 years old. 3. Nuclear power is experiencing a rebirth, with world economies choosing it as the clean electricity. 4. There are fossil fuels, solar energy, and nuclear energy.

14 Which is the strong main idea? 1. US electricity demand is projected to increase 24% by 2035. 2. Oil, coal and natural gas are fossil fuels. 3. Nuclear power, resisted by many, may be a long term solution and has come a long way since Chernobyl. 4. The Price-Anderson act guarantees U.S. utilities 98% protection against nuclear-accident liability and transfers the costs to the taxpayers.

16 Why Cite Your Sources? Gives credibility and authority to your arguments. Helps other researchers verify your work. Helps you to avoid plagiarism and make sure that you are giving credit where it is due.

17 Outline Citations MLA Parenthetical citation (citation in parenthesis) required for facts listed on the outline. What goes in the parenthesis? First choice: Author’s last name Second Choice: If no author is listed, default to short version of title.
