1 ORAL ENGLISH: WEEK 14 Telephone Skills Making Appointments Holding a Meeting Workplace Scenario Skits

2 Graduation Survey  How did you feel when you graduated from high school?  Did you have a ceremony?  How did you celebrate?  How will you celebrate when you graduate from Sias?  How do you think you will feel then?

3 Graduation Vocabulary  graduation ceremony (commencement)  Ex. There will be a lot of excitement and tears at this years graduation ceremony.  cap and gown  Ex. When you graduate, will you wear a cap and gown?  diploma  Ex. You have worked so hard to earn your diploma.

4 Culture Corner  In American graduations, every student walks on stage and has their name read aloud. Sometimes this takes 2 days!  Parents, grandparents, siblings, and close friends will attend the graduation.  Graduation parties or graduation dinners are common.  Family and friends often give the graduate a card with money.

9  A: Your back and neck have been hurting you since a car accident you were in. Call Dr. Ben to schedule an appointment.  Ex. Hello, my name is Nancy Green. My back and neck have been hurting me since I was in a car accident. I would like to schedule a doctor’s appointment.  B: You are the receptionist at a doctor’s office. You schedule appointments for all the doctors.  Ex. Hello, this is Dr. Ben’s office. How can I help you?

10  A: You submitted your resume to several companies and are waiting for them to contact you.  Ex. Hello?(This is Bella.)  B: You are a manager at Global Enterprises. You are looking to hire a sales assistant. You have reviewed A’s resume and would like to set up an interview.  Ex. Hello, this is Jason Harris from Global Enterprises. May I speak to Bella?  (I received your resume and would like to schedule an interview with you. Are you free…)

11  A: You are an energetic young student looking for an apprenticeship with Bill Gates. You call Microsoft to ask about this opportunity.  Ex. Hi Leslie, my name is George Straight. I am a student at Harvard University. I would like to speak to Bill Gates about the possibility of an apprenticeship.  B: First, you are the receptionist, Leslie. Put the call through to Bill Gates. Then act as Bill Gates.  Ex. Thank you for calling Microsoft. This is Leslie. How can I help you?

16 What is a scenario? : a description of what could possibly happen in a situation  The most likely scenario is that he goes back to school in the fall.  The best-case scenario would be for us to finish the work by tomorrow.  In the worst-case scenario, we would have to start the project all over again.

17 Workplace Scenario Skits  Groups of 2 or 3  Use the scenario you are given to create a skit (short drama)  Use the phrases you’ve learned in class.

19 1. A server dumps hot food down the front of a customer. The customer is extremely upset. Their clothes probably need special cleaning, they are a little scalded and extremely embarrassed. (Customer, server, and manager)

20 2. The restaurant’s boss is observing all of the employees today to decide who to promote. A table of customers come and have many complaints. The waitress deals with the complaints and keeps her boss happy. (Boss, waitress, 2 Customers)

21 3. Two friends work at competing companies. One day you see your best friend and her boss. The boss promises you a better job if you switch companies and tell her your company’s secrets. (2 friends and a boss)

22 4. Two customers complain that the tour they’ve just taken was terrible. They accuse the tour guide company of false advertisement. They are demanding a complete refund. (2 customers, 1 tour guide)

23 5. At the end of the semester a student is not happy with his grade. He brings his teacher a gift and asks the teacher to make his grade higher. (Teacher and student)

24 6. Two employees work at a high-end store. One person has been stealing and tries to convince his friend to join in. However, the boss is actually working with the first employee to test the other’s honesty. (2 employees, 1 boss)

25 7. Two employees at a store lie to a customer about the price of an item so they can get more money which they keep for themselves. Another worker sees it. In the end, the customer returns and is very angry. The boss finds out. (3 employees, 1 customer, 1 boss)

26 8. A team of salespeople at a cellphone store have a meeting. Recently sales have been down. Customers have complained that the clothing is too expensive and the customer service is terrible. The salespeople meet with their boss to discuss ideas for improving sales. (1 boss, 3 salespeople)

27 9. A parent is scheduled to meet with her son’s teacher, Mrs. Lee, for a parent/teacher conference. However, her son is sick and she needs to stay home. She calls Mrs. Lee to cancel her meeting. (1 parent, 1 teacher)

28 10. A class holds a meeting to discuss their graduation party. There is some disagreement about where this party should take place, what kinds of activities to have, and what kinds of food to have. (4 students)

29 Homework  Write me a letter. (1-2 pages)  Please tell me:  What did you enjoy most about this class?  What is one thing you would change?  Anything else you’d like to share with me. :)

30  A: You are Mrs. Lee.  Ex. Hello, this is Mrs. Lee.  B: You are a parent. You are scheduled to meet with your son’s teacher, Mrs. Lee, for a teacher conference. Your son is sick and you need to stay home. Call Mrs. Lee and cancel your meeting.  Ex. Hi Mrs. Lee. This is John Smith. We have a teacher conference scheduled for tomorrow at 3pm….
