DISCOVERY EDUCATION “Discover the Possibilities” www.discoveryeducation.com

Creating a Log-In The first step is to make sure that you have created a log-in. If you do not have one, please see Mrs. Hartsfield for instructions. After your log-in has been created, and you are able to sign-in, we are ready to begin!!

Getting an Overview After you have successfully logged in, copy and paste the following link in your URL to watch a short introduction video of Discovery Education. http://teachers.discoveryeducation.com/profe ssionalDevelopment/US/explore/index.cfm

Teacher Center After signing in, find the “Teacher Center” at the bottom of the page, and double click. There are a couple of interesting links I would like to highlight that I believe you might find helpful. –Thematic Focus- this changes weekly and usually has a lesson plan for 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. The topic is usually the same, for instance, the one I saw was on the Solar System. –Lesson Plan Library- this is a great source for teachers who are looking for the entire package for lesson plans. The lesson plans give you links to video streaming, websites and helpful activities to use when teaching a particular lesson.

Classroom Resources Click on the Classroom Resources link in the bottom right hand corner of the home page. Next, click on the Lesson Plan Library link. Use the pull-down menu to choose your grade level and subject. After finding a new lesson that you find interesting, make an example from one of the lessons that you plan to do with your class. –For example, if the lesson calls for you to make verb cards for a class game, make the verb cards.

Classroom Resources Continued… Puzzlemaker- This is a resource that many of you have used before, but if not, take a look at it!! It’s a great way to reinforce vocabulary. –Word search –Criss-cross –Double puzzles –Fallen phrases –Math squares –Mazes –Letter tiles –Cryptograms –Number blocks –Hidden messageMAKE A PUZZLE OF OF YOUR CHOICE!!

Exploring Discovery Streaming Find the search option at the top of the Discovery Education home page. In the search box, type in the key word “poetry” You will notice that several options pull up for poetry, choose the video segment titled “Ollie the Octopus” After choosing this option, you will notice that there are videos, teacher guides, and blackline masters available for this particular skill. Print off the blackline masters.

Exploring Discovery Streaming Continued…………. Not all video segments will have the teacher’s guides and blackline masters, but many do! Notice that the teacher’s guides provide many extra activities to do with your class such as follow up questions for after watching the video.

Downloading Videos It is important to download the videos before you plan to use them. They will buffer while they are playing if you don’t. These are the instructions for downloading a video: –Make sure that you are displaying all of the video segments. –In the bottom right hand corner of each segment title, there is a picture that looks like a film strip. Right click on that icon, and choose “save target as” –You will need to choose where you would like to save the document and name it as well. –I suggest that you make a folder on your desktop to put all your downloaded videos in.

Congratulations By now you should be well on your way to understanding all of Discovery Education. Remember that you “learn by doing” so continue to discover on your own. Please turn in all materials that you were asked to print off in order to receive your PLU credits.
