3. Inclusion Your child is in an inclusion classroom. Inclusion is a mix of “typical" students as well as students with special education needs. All students have the same curriculum but it is differentiated. There are 2 teachers and a Para to ensure that students are receiving the differentiation that they need. Both teachers have experience and training for students with special needs. Both teachers take equal responsibility for the class as a whole. The students do not know who is identified with an IEP and who is not.

Homework Homework – weekly assignment sheet –IXL math –Achieve 3000 (Reading) optional –Physical Activity –Vocabulary review & practice –Family Time and discussion According to the Appoquinimink District Homework policy, the length of homework for a fifth grader should be between one to three assignments taking approximately 50 minutes depending on the child. This is actual time on work, not including off task behavior or breaks.)

Achieve 3000 Computer based Literacy Comprehension Program with a non-fiction focus –Weekly class activities The five Steps everyone must do each time: –E-mail –Read passage (take notes while reading) –Complete multiple choice questions –Open ended written response –Poll Games and other activities are for use when the required activities are complete! Parents have a code to check in on student progress! 11

IXL Math Computer based math program that allows students to practice and review skills IXL will be used during homework and center time Students will complete the assigned number of minutes in the topic and grade level assigned by the teacher. Students may access IXL for topics of choice once required minutes are completed for the week. 12

14. Delaware Comprehensive Assessment of Students 3 Times a year Fall, Winter, & Spring Math Reading Spring - Science In addition to the fifth grade report cards, the DCAS scores will determine if a child is promoted, retained, or must attend summer school.

Reporting Student Progress Agendas Report cards (3 times a year) Parent-Teacher conferences will be held in November and March to discuss progress Weekly Progress Reports (Friday Folders) Provides information on classroom citizenship Academic difficulties will be noted as needed Every six weeks, an academic update will be provided You can also check the SLE website for our newsletter and assignments.
