Professionalism Criteria Taking Responsibility including time management Oral and Written Communication Working with people Asking and Answering the Right Questions Solving Problems

Professionalism Grading Your supervisor will send you an email by Friday afternoon each week, that’s looks like: Taking Responsibility including time management (+) met with Carol early to finalize survey Oral and Written Communication (-) sent bad email Working with people (0) Asking and Answering the Right Questions (0) Solving Problems (0) At the end of the semester, all “+” and “-” will be added up. For example: A student with 6 pluses and 5 minuses will receive one extra credit point on the top of their overall 315 grade You can gain up to 5 points or lose up to 10 points on your overall 315 grade.

Research Methods Paper- 15 Points This paper is designed to develop and test your analytical skills for dealing with simple quantitative data Several chapters in the Maxwell Manual will be helpful “Is that a Fact?” is crucial All materials has been covered in class- SO PAY ATTENTION

Research Methods Paper Template Found on the 315 website under “Assignments-Week 3 ” How to use the template: Insert your double-spaced answers below each of the corresponding questions Remember to put your name on the grade sheet (Just like a 101 module)

Research Method Template Go to word document on the Web Questions 1-5

Question 4 and 5 Mini-Workshop Two BIG Questions to ask about data and findings Representativeness Accurate GET THIS STRAIGHT FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE

Accuracy vs. Representativeness Example: I am conducting a survey of drinking habits of 315 students. I send out a survey and every student responds. Is the sample representative? Is the data accurate?

Accuracy vs. Representativeness Workshop Hold up “A” when you see a slide that describes accuracy. Hold up “R” when you see a slide that describes representativeness.

Comparisons based on gender were not possible due to a lack of information about the target population. Accuracy or Representativeness?

Respondents may have been compelled to provide positive responses because of fear that the agency would be displeased with negative feedback.

Accuracy or Representativeness? The data for the target population concerning this variable is a year old. This implies that those respondents in the age ranges 0-21 and 65+ may be under represented in the sample, while those between the ages of 22 and 64 may be over represented. Since people’s standards and opinions are likely to fluctuate as they age, this difference may have impacted the results.

Accuracy or Representativeness? Since the survey’s intent was to rate satisfaction levels for the various services ENABLE offered, the people who are more likely to respond are those who have extreme opinions on the services.

Certain questions did not have consistent scales. One such example is question six in which “timely manner” was not explained in concrete terms and therefore may have been interpreted differently by different respondents. Accuracy or Representativeness?

Representativeness AND Size Size of sample versus size of target population. Small target population—under 500, close to 100% as possible. Page 43 of Maxwell Manual Large –over 500—greater than 1000, use confidence interval table. Page 47 of Maxwell Manual

Sample n=30 Target Population N=100 Difference Male35%65%+30% Female55%45%-10% Use this Table Format in you Paper Use this format when comparing sample to target population Gender Representativeness
