5 HEA Academic Practice Grants Teaching Development Grant Scheme [http://www.heacademy.ac.uk/tdg]http://www.heacademy.ac.uk/tdg Funding to support evidence-based research and to encourage innovations in learning and teaching that have the potential for sector- wide impact. Over the next year there will be a total of £1.5 million of funding available for individual grants, departmental grants and collaborative grants. This bid-based development grant funding exists to stimulate evidence-based research and encourage innovations in learning and teaching that have the potential for sector-wide impact. 5

6 The substantive thematic call areas for 2012/13 are assessment and feedback and flexible learningassessment and feedbackflexible learning Individual Scheme The individual call has now closed, and funding has been allocated to successful projects. There will another call later in the year. Departmental bids: Closed 27 September 2012. Up to £30k. 7 The impact of HE reforms on learning and teaching While the four nations may differ in their approach to reform of provision in higher education, all agree it will be achieved through excellence in teaching that inspires excellence in learning. As the national body for learning and teaching, the Higher Education Academy (HEA) is committed to establishing a body of evidence that helps to shape and inform policy, and underpins changes to practice. The HEA invites bids for two pieces of commissioned research and proposals for new research in a third area: OPEN CALL: The impact of the shifting higher education landscape on learning and teaching – max £20,000 RESEARCH TENDER OPPORTUNITY: Review of HEFCE Quality Enhancement Policies - The deadline for funding applications to be received is 21 st February 2013. 7 Research tenders and open call for proposals for 2012-13

8 Doctoral Programme Funding to support PhD studentships with a focus on learning and teaching research. The next call will be open over Summer 2013. Up to £20k p.a. for successful bids. http://www.heacademy.ac.uk/doctoral-programme International Scholarship Scheme Funding to support individuals to undertake specific investigations outside of the UK and deliver specific outcomes for dissemination within the UK sector at the end of the scholarship. 9 The HEA’s Travel Fund was massively popular in 2011/12, with many academics and postgraduate students attending learning and teaching events across the four nations to disseminate and hear about good practice. The criteria for applying to the fund have changed for the coming academic year, with grants now available in three streams: Funding for travel to an event across a nation’s border (e.g. from Northern Ireland to England, Scotland or Wales); Funding for travel for students to attend a learning and teaching event; Funding for travel to present a paper about learning and teaching.
