3 Teacher Education Dispositions Teachers with positive professional dispositions tend to act in ways that elevate the profession of teaching in the eyes of others. 5 Student Teaching Qualifications You must... Graduate within the academic year that you student teach. Meet academic standards as outlined in the college catalog, departmental, and university handbooks. Have the appropriate GPA Complete required coursework (form 3)

6 Qualifications Continued Be approved by your department for student teaching. (Dispositions, Clearances, etc.) Provide negative TB tine test results, ACT 34, ACT 151, PA-FBI, one million dollars of professional liability insurance, and ACT 126 training by posted deadlines.

7 ACT 126: Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting Mandated training addressing child abuse recognition and reporting. New State requirement for everyone working with children. Required as part of application process for teachers. Needs to be renewed every five years. October 16 th training at MU (Handout)

8 Clearance Deadlines Fall 2014 Student Teachers provide clearances and professional liability insurance dated no earlier than February 1, 2014, and no later than June 30, 2014. Copies of all clearances need to be on file in Retan 202 by June 30 th. Spring 2015 Student Teachers provide clearances and professional liability insurance dated no earlier than June 15, 2014, and no later than September 30, 2014. Copies of all clearances need to be on file in Retan 202 by September 30 th. Make a note of these dates, your assignments may be cancelled if you do not comply with this state law and Mansfield University policy.

10 How do I apply for Student Teaching? Use the directions on the small, white piece of paper to guide you through the student teaching application process. All of the forms needed for application to student teaching are on the Field Experience website. http://www2.mansfield.edu/teacher/ http://www2.mansfield.edu/teacher/ Complete all forms outlined on the direction paper, put them in red folder, and turn the folder into Retan 202 by October 4 th.

11 Form 1: The Application Review Sample Application First Access Sample Application through the Field Experience website. Once you have read through the sample application information you will find a link at the bottom that shows what the application looks like.

13 Application Log In Go to My.Mansfield to apply. Use campus services ID to log in – same as used with D2L. Use the tab key to move between fields. Print out 1 copy for your application packet.

16 Tentative Regions Identify three teaching region choices. Not every district listed is used each semester. Mansfield makes final determination of location and semester of student teaching. Diversity will be considered. Please do not contact a potential cooperating teacher and/or administrator without permission.

19 The Application is a Guideline for Making Assignments Every effort is made to place students within the three regions selected. However, assignments can not be guaranteed. Under NO circumstances should a student contact districts, schools, or teachers to attempt to arrange a placement. This is a violation of the legal agreements signed between each district and Mansfield University.

20 Assignment Guidelines Candidates for student teaching may not be assigned within schools or school districts wherein they: 1. have attended or graduated; 2. have children (whether natural parent or guardian) or member of their immediate family attending; 3. have members of the immediate family or “significant other” employed in any capacity; 4. have members of the immediate family serving on the Board of Education; 5. have members of family or their “significant other” attending or working;

21 Assignment Guidelines Continued 6. have financial ties. (Policy Passed By the Teacher Education Council of Chairpersons, April, 1998) Great care is put into assigning placements that offer the best possible learning experiences in educationally enriching and diverse settings. Do not sign a housing lease before receiving confirmed student teaching assignments. Transportation and housing are the student’s responsibility.

22 Tentative Timeline for Assignments Approximately May 1 st – Tentative assignments distributed for both fall and spring. Approximately August 1 st – Confirmed assignments e-mailed to fall student teachers. Approximately December 1 st – Confirmed assignments distributed during an on- campus meeting for spring student teachers.

23 Form 2: Tentative Plans Access form at Field Experience website, http://mansfield.edu/teacher/, fill it out, and take it to your education advisor. http://mansfield.edu/teacher/ Consider making an appointment today. Use pencil as you plan your remaining time at Mansfield. Obtain your education advisor’s signature. Keep a copy.

25 Preparation for Meeting with Advisor Complete (and have a copy of) the entire contents of the packet to take to your advisor meeting.

26 Secondary Advisor Dr. Werner-Burke will hold group advising sessions for secondary majors in 209 Retan Center on the following days: Monday, 9/30, 11:30 – 12:30, Tuesday, 10/1, 11:30 – 12:30, and Thursday, 10/3, 1:30 – 2:30.

27 Music and Art Advisor Meetings Music students should sign up to meet with Dr. Monkelien (list on her door). Art students should sign up to meet with Dr. Whitehouse (list on her door). All materials should be completed and printed out prior to the conference. Remember the application deadline is October 4 th.

28 Form 3: Required Courses Fill out the section that applies to you. Indicate the term and year you took or plan to take the courses listed. (example F/13) Provide documentation for any course substitutions.

30 Other Coursework During Student Teaching One course allowed ONLY IF it is the last course for graduation and/or certification. Petition to take a course is required. The student must register for the additional course.

31 Form 4: Personal Data Sheet Log in to My Mansfield http://my.mansfield.edu/http://my.mansfield.edu/ Click on the Student Teaching Link. Fill out the Data Sheet and submit it. Print out two copies to include in application packet. Type to perfection. No typos or grammatical errors. This is your first impression on your cooperating teacher.

32 Personal Data Sheet Continued Curriculum = major (ex. Secondary Education) *dual majors would list both Specialization= content (ex. History); delete this if you do not have a specialization

33 What to turn in One Application, stapled in top left. Tentative Plans form (in pencil) and signed by your advisor. Required Courses form. Two Data Sheets, stapled in top left. Red folder with completed label. DUE FRIDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2013.

34 Other Points of Interest: Registering for Student Teaching The Field Experience Office will register students for Student Teaching and Professional Seminar, the course that accompanies Student Teaching. Petitioned courses must be registered by the student. The Intent to Graduate form needs to be turned in one year in advance. (Academic Records – Forms – Application for Graduation.)

35 Planning In Advance... Student teaching is viewed as a full-time job. Try not to work during student teaching. If a student must work, then a form must be completed on the first day of student teaching. If employment interferes with student teaching, a choice will have to be made.

36 Mansfield E-Mail Account Important information from the Field Experience Office will be sent via Mansfield e-mail. Please get into the habit of systematically checking MU email.

39 Please Keep Us Updated Any change in your campus or home address should be reported to the Field Experiences Office immediately. Changes reported to Enrollment Services do not make it to the Field Experience Office. If you discover you are unable to student teach notify the Field Experience Office immediately. ~ Thank You ~
