Proposed Method to Quantify Particulate Matter Emissions from Windblown Dust Duane Ono, Great Basin Unified Air Pollution Control District Ken Richmond, ENVIRON International, Corp. Presented at CSOSE Meeting, Las Vegas, NV May 17, 2011

OTM Status Draft OTM (Other Test Method) is available for review by Inverse Modeling Technical Committee. Revise OTM by the end of June and submit to USEPA for review.

Principles of the Method The vertical flux of windblown particulate matter (PM) emissions is proportional to the horizontal saltation (or sand) flux (q) for a given area and time. The ratio of the PM flux to sand flux (aka K- factors, K f ) can be back-calculated from monitored PM concentrations using a dispersion model. K-factors can be used with sand flux (K f ) to estimate PM emissions. PM = K f x q

Applicability The proposed method can be applied on any open surface area susceptible to wind erosion where saltation (or sand) flux can be measured. Windblown particulate matter can be quantified for PM 10, PM 10-2.5 or PM 2.5.

OTM Includes: Sampling network and equipment requirements QA/QC for data collection Calculation procedures Sample application using the proposed method Alternative approaches: sand flux with default K f, sand catch as a survey tool, threshold wind speed determination.
