HW Research political issues that have occurred as a result of Stock resources Bring in your research next lesson; e.G 1.the fight for resources in the Artic and issues it may have caused between countries 2.The spratling islands in Vietnam – issues between Japan, Vietnam, Philippines, and China

FUEL TRENDS; Task You are going to focus on one fuel and answer the following questions; 1)What is the current trend in production? 2)What is the trend in consumption? 3)Why do you think these trends exist? 4)What are the main trade movements in this fuel? 5)What issues might exist as a result of these trends? Key fuel types Coal Oil Gas

CoalOilGas Current trendEuropean coal industry is decline, but still a valuable fuel in LEDC countries Greatest consumption in the Asia Pacific region Growth in Oil usage by 0.9% Greatest consumption levels in Middle east / USA and Europe High production levels in Middle east, Syria, Libya and USA USA is the largest producer of natural gas in the world Russia in 2013 had a decline in production levels Trend in consumption1.Coal consumption grew by 2.5% in 2012, well below the 10-year average of 4.4% 2.the fastest-growing fossil fuel 3.Chinese consumption growth accounted for all of the net growth in global coal consumption, and China accounted for more than half of global coal consumption for the first time. 4. US consumption decrease – Eun increased! China leading the consumption levels (5% increase) Weakest growth in OECD countries Japan has also had a large increase in usage of Oil (6%) Large consumption in USA and Canada (2 tonnes/ person) Russia also has similar levels of consumption Main movements in fuelSouthern Hemisphere countries dominate the Coal exports Europe is heavily dependent on Russia and north Africa USA imports nearly all levels of Coal Indonesia exports heavily to the rest of the Asia Pacific Region Europe is heavily dependent on piped gas from Russia Europe also gets from South America and Africa USA has a domestic market Middle east Dominates exports USA dominates Oil imports Issues with trends and consumption Reliance on other countries Very politically unstable Reliance on other countries Europe and Russia are 2 competing ideologies (Former communism vs. capitalism)

GLOBAL RESOURCE TRENDS By the end of the lesson you will; 1.Have reviewed the key consumption and and trends in stock fuels around the world 2. have explained why these trends exist 3.Have explained how these figures could lead to issues in the future

THE GEOPOLITICS OF FUEL Task Read through the article on Russia and its relations with other European Countries 1.What were its issues? 2.How did they impact on other countries in Europe? 3.Why do you think they are able to get away with this? 4.What impact might this have on future relations? 8 APPLYING YOUR NEW KNOWLEDGE Study the following picture of a proposed gas pipe line from China, through Central Asia and into Europe. Why do you think this new route is strategically important for Europe and central Europe?
