UNIT 6 SPORT PART A READING SKILLS Summarising a text
One common type of question in HKCE English Language examination is the general theme question. The question asks you to sum up the key points and identify the subject or main topic of the entire passage. p.111
3
Here are two typical examples:
Another suitable title for this article would be … Danger on the slopes. Snowboarding for all. Why parents worry. Extreme sports. The article is about … how to avoid accidents. a great new sport. the dangers of snowboarding. why people take risks in sport. p.111
4
For questions such as these you should:
find the key points identify the subject or main topic of the text To do this, you need good summarising skills. p.111
5
RECOGNISING THE SUBJECT/MAIN TOPIC
To decide what the subject or main topic is, ask yourself, ‘What is the text about?’ The answer to this simple question is the subject or main topic. p.111
6
To find what the text is about, use your skimming skills:
read the title carefully, as it may be a good clue to the subject. read the first and last paragraphs, as the subject or main topic is often found in them. Writers often start and conclude the article, letter, etc. by referring to the main topic. go through the text quickly and note which topics the writer mentions often. p.111
7
RECOGNISING SUBTOPICS
Once you have decided on the subject or main topic, you need to look for any subtopics. These are specific aspects of the subject that the writer wants us to consider. For example, if the subject of a text is extreme sports, there may be one or more sub-topics: particular extreme sports the dangers what makes people do them safety equipment and so on. p.111
8
To find the sub-topics, skim through the text and notice:
1. any subheads which guide the reader 2. the opening sentences of paragraphs as these are where subtopics are often introduced 3. any mention of less general topics p.112
9
HOW TO GET A GOOD UNDERSTANDING OF THE WHOLE TEXT
Now that you know what the subject of the text is, and what the sub-topics are, you need to get an overall grasp of the whole article, letter, essay or narrative. To do this, ask yourself these questions: What arguments are presented? Are any conclusions reached? What are the writer’s opinions? What is being described? p.112
10
Activity 1 Now skim through the following text quickly and answer the questions based on the information in it. p.112
11
THESE SHOES ARE MADE FOR JOGGING
A good pair of training shoes ensures injury-free jogging. Shoe manufacturers offer us more sports shoe options than ever before, but so much choices only make shopping for a suitable pair more difficult! So, how do we choose the best training shoes for jogging? p.112
12
The shoes should be comfortable, with excellent cushioning, flexibility and shock absorption. To check for cushioning, put both shoes on. Then jump up and down on a hard surface. The shoes should feel elastic and comfortable. Next, test for flexibility: make sure that the shoe bends easily as you run. The upper of the shoe should not be too stiff. Leather is the best material, but it is expensive; so nylon is often used instead. Canvas is not a good material for the serious jogger, since it gives little support for the feet. p.112
13
The sub-topic is ,‘How do we choose the best
If the main subject of this text is sports shoes, what is the narrower sub-topic? ____________________________________________________________________________________ In which paragraph is the sub-topic stated? Write out the exact wording which states the sub-topic. Copy it directly from the passage. The sub-topic is ,‘How do we choose the best training/sports shoes for jogging?’. In paragraph 2, ‘So, how do we choose the best training shoes for jogging?’. p.113
14
What three aspects of a jogging shoe are noted by the writer?
____________________________________________________________________________________ What material is the best, and what is the worst, for the ‘upper’ of a jogging shoe? ____________________________________________________________________________________ The three aspects are cushioning, flexibility and shock absorption. Leather is the best and canvas is the worst material for the ‘upper’ of a jogging shoe. p.113
15
The title of this article does not tell you clearly what the subject is. Choose an alternative title which is more direct. Don’t run before you can walk Trendy gear for the jogger How to choose a shoe for jogging Sports shoes – the choice is yours. Write a one-sentence summary of the passage in about 11 words. ____________________________________________________________________________________ C Comfortable jogging shoes should have excellent cushioning, flexibility and good shock absorption. p.113
16
Recognising synonyms and paraphrases
Writers often use synonyms (words with similar meanings) and paraphrases (phrases which are different ways of saying the same thing). They do this for two main reasons: to avoid repetition to make clear the meaning of an unfamiliar or technical term to the reader p.113
17
For example: Extreme sports like rock climbing and snowboarding are getting more and more popular all over the world. However, these dangerous but exciting activities can also be life-threatening. Many young people die in accidents as a result of performing these risky sports. p.113
18
The underlined phrase these dangerous but exciting activities is a paraphrase of extreme sports. It helps readers understand what extreme sports means by giving another description of it using familiar words. The words dangerous and risky are synonyms, words with a similar meaning. p.113
19
In the HKCE English Language examination, recognising synonyms and paraphrases can help you tackle two kinds of questions: p.114
20
back-referencing questions For example:
In paragraph XX, the phrase ‘these dangerous but exciting activities’ refers to … rock-climbing. snowboarding. extreme sports. any sport that is life-threatening. You should select option C because ‘these dangerous but exciting activities’ is an explanatory paraphrase of ‘extreme sports’. p.114
21
question asking about the meaning of a word/phrase
For example: In paragraph XX, ‘risky’ means …… extremely exciting. dangerous. time consuming. demanding as a way of life. The correct answer, B, is indicated by the use of the more familiar word dangerous in the sentence before. Dangerous and risky are synonyms as they are used here. p.114
22
It will help you to recognise synonyms and paraphrases if you pay attention to the following:
Synonyms and paraphrases can often be found between commas (,) or after dash (-). Extreme sports, or action sports, have become a favourite with television audiences. Synonyms and paraphrases are often introduced by such expressions as or, in other words, that is, which means, which is also called, and also known as. The best way to get better at recognising synonyms and paraphrases is to build up your vocabulary through reading. p.114
23
Activity 2 Read the following text on rock climbing. Then study the table below the text. There are 6 pairs of synonyms in the table. One half of each pair is taken from the text on rock climbing. Find the matching synonym and write the corresponding code in the spaces provided. Look carefully at the context of each of the six words taken from the passage. This will help you to choose the right synonym. Follow the example. p.115
24
The Training Centre has run training courses for rock climbing for nearly twenty years. These courses are popular with young people here. Both theory and practice are covered in the courses, which consist of three levels of expertise. For the beginner, the recommended clothing includes rubber-soled boots and thick socks, as well as loose-fitting trousers. To protect the head, wear a crash helmet. The dangers of rock climbing are not great so long as sensible safety measures are followed. No experienced climber would ever neglect these. p.115

34
Non-commercial - for information
We can say that there are two basic kinds of advertisements: Non-commercial - for information Commercial - to sell goods or services But even the most commercial ads give some information, and non-commercial ones are often selling something. Both are trying to persuade the reader. So they are not so different. p.117

In Japan, sumo is almost like a religion. The fighting ring is a kind of holy place; salt and Japanese rice wine were used to bless it many times during the afternoon. …… San San knew that she had to keep ahead of Kendall, who was her closet rival. Heading towards the second mark, San San captured a favourable wind shift and left Kendall behind. As they moved towards the third mark, Kendall, who was now under pressure, gambled and went to the right while San San chose a narrower route. Eventually, Kendall's gamble failed. The wind died and she had no chance of beating San San. San San had to beat Barbara Kendall of New Zealand to receive the gold medal. San San took the lead by the end of the fifth race and continued leading in to the next race. However, she had her worst result in the seventh race. She finished seventh in the field of 27 competitors. Luckily, it was no problem as she was allowed to remove her worst two results. 3 Click BACK p.126

4 When the final, eighth race began on 29 July, the wind speed was just above the minimum for a race to be held. Poland's Dorota Staszewska took an early lead, heading towards the first mark, followed closely by San San and Kendall. It took the leader about 13 minutes to reach the first mark; quite a slow speed due to the light breeze. San San knew that she had to keep ahead of Kendall, who was her closest rival. 5 ‘When I was coming second, I knew I had to stay there to win the gold medal. But I had not yet won a race in the series, so I decided to push ahead and win’, said San San after the victory ceremony. ‘I really appreciate the support of my family’, San San continued. ‘Unfortunately, they could not be here with me. I have a big family. I didn‘t have enough money to bring them all here’. But her family were there in spirit, as was most of Hong Kong to watch San San‘s victory. Four years before this victory, San San finished 11th in her first Olympics, the 1992 Barcelona Games. ’This dream started seven years ago and now it has come true’, said Hong Kong coach, Dutchman Rene Appel. ‘She was very devoted to sports. When she still lived in Cheung Chau, she had to travel a long way to other places in Hong Kong to train’. BACK p.126

Junior wrestlers rise at 5 am for training whilst more senior fighters get an extra 2 hours sleep. There is no breakfast, but a large lunch at which the famous hot-pot is eaten. Rikishi wear a particular type of clothing based on ancient traditional Japanese dress. This changes as the wrestler moves up into higher ranks. Even in the cold Japanese winter, the lowest ranking wrestlers are allowed only a yukata, a robe made of thin cotton, and wooden sandals, called geta. These make a distinctive clip-clop noise as the wearer walks along. The ranks above can put a short coat on over their yukata and change the wooden clogs for soft sandals made of straw. While the top fighters, the sekitori, are entitled to silk robes of their own choosing. Outside the huge sporting venue there were lots of brightly-coloured banners flying in the wind. Each flag had the name of a famous sumo wrestler on it. Inside was the ring - the Dohyo. It was quite big - about 4.5 metres across. But then the wrestlers came in wearing their ceremonial mawashi, and the ring didn't look so big any more. The sumo wrestlers were HUGE, very tall and very heavy, about 150 kilos each. The proper Japanese name for a sumo fighter is rikishi, by the way. ________ ________________________________ 3.
