1  Describe a time when you had to react quickly to something.

2 Communication and Control

3  I will be able to describe the relationship between my central nervous system and my peripheral nervous system.  I will know the three parts of my brain and list one function of each.  I will understand the difference between the left and right sides of my brain.

4  Central Nervous System: The brain and the spinal cord.  Peripheral Nervous System: All the parts of the nervous system except for the brain and the spinal cord.

5  The central nervous system processes and responds to all messages coming from the peripheral nervous system.

6  Neurons send messages to my brain about the world around me.  Neuron: A nerve cell that is specialized to receive and conduct electrical impulses.

7  Dendrites are the “branches” that receive signals and send them to the nerve cell body.  Neurons are connected to each other by axons and impulses travel through them and eventually end up in the brain.

8  Nerve: A collection of nerve fibers (axons) through which impulses travel between the central nervous system and other parts of the body.

9 Dendrites receive information from the world around me. This signal is sent to nerve cell body and transferred into my axon It travels though a series of axons and nerve cells before “linking up” with my spinal cord. It then moves up to my brain where it is processed and interpreted into the sensations I experience.

10  Follow along with Mr. Wager as he leads you through some visual concepts of the nervous system.

11  Long-term memory enables us to recall events that happened to us long ago. These memories can be triggered by a stimulus, such as a song or a smell, or they can be deliberately recalled. Recalling memories helps us to refresh them and makes them last a lifetime.  In your journals, write down you earliest memory, your happiest recollection, or your most embarrassing moment.

12  Describe the relationship between your central nervous system and your peripheral nervous system.  The central nervous system processes and responds to all messages coming from the peripheral nervous system.

13  Synapses form in a human baby’s brain at the rate of 3 billion a second. At 8 months old, a baby’s brain has about 1,000 trillion connections. After that, the number begins to decline. Half the connections die by the time the child reaches age 10, leaving about 500 trillion connections.

15  Cerebrum: largest part of my brain where memories are stored, voluntary movements are controlled, and allows you to sense touch, light, sound, odors, taste, pain, heat and cold. Cerebrum

16  Cerebellum: Second largest part of my brain that is responsible for movement and balance. Cerebellum

17  Medulla: the part that connects to my spinal cord. It controls involuntary processes, such as blood pressure, body temperature, heart rate, and involuntary breathing. Medulla

19  Watch the movie Lorenzo’s Oil a true story.  Be prepared to discuss stem cell research.

23  Echo read the sections on the nervous system in the text book (pages 84 and 85)and write the summary notes.

26  Spinal Cord Injury  Spinal Cord Injury: ◦ A spinal cord injury stops messages from getting to a location on the body to the brain. ◦ This would leave you paralyzed and unable to feel touch, pain and temperature in that area.

28  Movement Disorders: Parkinson’s, Muscular Dystrophy and Multiple Sclerosis are common neurological disorders.  They are the result of the stripping of the myelin sheath that surrounds the axons.
