Important Findings “Pollution or concerns about environmental quality” was one of the frequently noted issues detracting from health Runoff contributes to microbial contamination of water supply Major sources of non-point source pollution include runoff from farms, parking lots, streets, and golf courses Opportunities: Water pollution education Recycling and composting programs Runoff management to slow and clean water Environmental Quality

Important Findings: Pedestrian-friendly areas allow for exercise, economic activity, and social interaction. “Sidewalk improvements” was an option chosen frequently as a feature to contribute to health. However, injuries may increase if people are walking more, especially on inadequate footpaths or sidewalks. Pedestrian safety is an issue for those on the east side of Highway 1, along South Ocean Avenue, and near the school. The commercial core, while highly walkable, ranked slightly lower for safety factors Opportunities: Maintenance and improvement in existing areas Strengthen pedestrian network Work with the Health Agency for injury prevention Improved Sidewalks

PERCEPTIONS OF SAFETY & SECURITY – Important Findings Perceptions of safety and security are behavioral motivators (Minnesota Dept. of Health, 2012; Jackson & Sinclair, 2012) Both Oceano adults and children identified safety as a primary issue in the community No streetlights in residential areas – Opportunities: Street illumination in residential areas must be prioritized Incorporate Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles into design guidelines Increase patrols; seek grant funding to increase staff

OPPORTUNITIES FOR ACTIVE LIVING – Important Findings Increased physical activity levels correlates with positive health outcomes (U.S. Surgeon General’s Report on Physical Activity and Health, 1996; Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, 2008) Residents want to be active Oceano children are at risk Incomplete, disconnected and poorly maintained sidewalk network Lack of safely accessible and affordable park and recreation facilities Oceano Elementary is unofficially used as a recreation space – Opportunities: Place an emphasis on creating an active transportation network Land use patterns and zoning strategies Joint-Use agreements Make use of space and existing facilities

14. – Important Findings Low-income populations have less access to healthcare facilities; children of low-SES backgrounds have poorer health outcomes (Design for Health; 2007; Schwartz, 2009) Oceano has no primary care or community health care facilities in the community Cultural and generational barriers may be hindering active living behaviors – Opportunities: Developers’ incentives programs to help recruit medical service and health care providers Development guidelines Partnerships Explore low-cost health strategies ACCESS TO HEALTHCARE + EDUCATION
