Chapter 15

Nervous and endocrine system cooperate in regulating and controlling activities of the other body systems Nervous system – divided into 2 parts: 1. Central nervous system (CNS) – brain and spinal cord 2. Peripheral nervous system (PNS) – a. Cranial nerves – carry impulses between the brain and neck and head b. Spinal nerves – carry messages between spinal cord and abdomen, limbs, and chest Organs involved – brain, cerebellum, cerebrum, spinal cord, meninges, nerves

Cerebell/o....................................................cerebellum Cerebr/o..............................................cerebrum, brain Dur/o.................................................hard, dura mater Encephal/o............................................................brain Gangli/o, ganglion/o......................................ganglion Gli/o.............................................glia, gluey substance Meningi/o, mening/o...................................meninges Myel/o..........................................................spinal cord Neur/o...................................................................nerve Radic/o, radicul/o, rhiz/o............................nerve root

Esthesi/o.............sensation, sensitivity, feeling Ment/o, psych/o.........mind Mon/o................one, single Phas/o......................speech Poli/o................gray matter Quadr/i.........................four

-iatrist.......specialist, physician -iatry..........treatment, specialty -ictal...................seizure, attack -paresis..............slight paralysis (no prefixes in this chapter)

Give the definitions: 1. Ment/o or psych/o 2. -iatrist 3. Neur/o

How do you breakdown the following terms: 1. Encephalitis 2. Neuroma 3. Radicotomy

 Encephal/itis – inflammation of the brain  Mening/itis – inflammation of the meninges  Neur/algia – pain in the nerve  Neur/o/pathy – disease of the nerves (peripheral)  Neur/o/arthr/o/pathy – disease of the nerves and joints  Neur/asthenia – nerve weakness  Neur/oma – tumor make up of nerve cells

 Alzheimer disease (AD) – disease characterized by early senility, confusion, loss of recognition of persons or familiar surroundings, restlessness, and impaired memory  Cerebral palsy (CP) – condition characterized by lack of muscle control and partial paralysis  Epilepsy – disorder in which main symptom is recurring seizures  Stroke – occurs when there is an interruption of blood supply to region of the brain; this deprives nerve cells in the affected area of oxygen/nutrients

 Neur/ectomy – excision of nerve  Neur/o/lysis – separating a nerve (from adhesions)  CT scan – process that includes use of a computer to produce a series of brain tissue images at any desired depth  MRI scan – non-invasive technique that produces sectional images of soft tissue of the brain or spine through a strong magnetic field

An/esthesi/a – w/out feeling or sensation Dys/phasia – condition of difficulty speaking Intra/cerebr/al – pertaining to w/in the cerebrum Neur/o/logist – MD who studies and treats diseases of nervous system Quadr/i/plegia – paralysis of 4 limbs Coma – state of profound unconsciousness Conscious – awake, alert, aware of one’s surroundings Gait – manner or style of walking Syncope – fainting or sudden loss of consciousness caused by lack of blood supply to cerebrum

Psychiatry – specialty of the mind (branch of medicine that deals w/the treatment of mental disorders) Psychology – study of the mind (profession that involves dealing w/the mind and mental processes in relation to human behavior) Psychosomatic – pertaining to the mind and body Autism – mental disorder; the features of which include onset during infancy/childhood, preoccupation w/subjective mental activity, inability to interact socially, impaired communication, and repetitive body movements Other common terms – anorexia nervosa, ADHD, bipolar disorder, major depression, panic attack, PTSD, etc. (abbreviations are on p.721)
