Road Safety Practitioner Foundation Course - Overview and Experience Ian Edwards

Course Development Defining the role of Road safety Practitioner Development of a set of standards Course objective / evaluation Course development Course evaluation report

Course Aims By the end of the course a participant will be able to: – Assess the need for an educational intervention based on data – Critically analyse an educational intervention – Understand the role that research and evaluation has in road safety education – Understand the need to work in partnership with other organisations

Course Structure The course structure is: 2 days facilitated learning A 2000 word assignment Followed by: 2 days facilitated learning A 2000 word assignment

Practitioner’s role A Road Safety Practitioner’s role is to provide, or facilitate the provision, of road safety education and training that seeks to establish, maintain or adapt personal road user behaviours that maximise safety.

Content Learning theory – Behaviourist and Constructivist approaches Models of Behavioural Change – Trantheoretical Model of Change – Theory of Planned Behaviour – Dissonance Theory Safety, Ethics and Legislation Instructional approaches Evaluation

Evaluation Main findings from pilot (N = 19) 100% would recommend the course 97% felt they had gain some new ideas Good evidence to show change is knowledge (5 out of 8 statements in this area where statistically significant p<.05) Good self-report evidence to show transfer from the learning environment to real word.

Participant’s say… I really think about message delivery when designing presentations and have tried to pass this education on to colleagues for when they are delivering the presentations. Participant 1 Reducing the shock factor. The input I've developed is now a lot more learner led to help them get the answers, so they are more attached to the idea and possibility. Participant 2 I have rewritten my 6th Form road safety presentation to try and make the audience feel involved; I have taken elements of the evaluation training to help my organisation plan and evaluate its community safety (not just road safety) initiatives better. Participant 3

Messages In groups consider: – What makes a good message – How are messages transmitted Key areas to consider: – Delivery route (How will your target get your message) – Source (Not necessarily the person paying the bill) – Resonance (Will it connect with your audience?) – Strength / Reflection (Is it clear can you see yourself doing it in the future?)

Summary Course has exceeded expectations Is proving popular with all groups of attendees Is soon to be accredited by City & Guilds Questions?
