1 Ways to Separate Mixtures

2 Which Method? There are several ways to separate mixtures.
The physical properties of the mixture will determine which separation method is the best one to use.

3 Sifting Sifting involves using a sieve or a sifter as a way to separate solids of varying sizes. Examples include: rocks, gravel, and sand. Think of another example of a mixture that can be separated by sifting. Lavendar, M. (Photographer). (2010). US navy n-1120l-012 engineering aide constructionman christopher kumpf, a seabee assigned to naval mobile construction battalion (nmcb) 7., weighs soil samples. [Print Photo]. Retrieved from

4 Magnetic Attraction Magnets are used to separate magnetic materials such as iron, steel, nickel or cobalt from non-magnetic materials in a mixture. Examples include: separating iron filings from sand. Think of another example of a mixture that can be separated by using a magnet. Yug. (Photographer). (2005). Sand. [Print Photo]. 5 Filtration Filtration removes solids from liquids by using a filter.
Example: a mixture of sand and water Think of another example of a mixture that can be separated by using a filter. Venegas, A. (2013). Filter [Artist].

6 Evaporation Evaporation involves heating a solution until the liquids turn to gases and leave the solids behind. Example: boiling a solution of water and salt until all that is left are the salt crystals. Gran. (Photographer). (2009). Boiling water. [Print Photo]. Retrieved from

7 Which Method? You have been given a mixture of sand, salt, and water. Which method or methods will you use to separate this mixture? Why? + +
