Mixtures and Solutions Review

Mixtures A mixture combines two or more materials without changing their properties. Because a mixture is the result of a physical change, it can be reversed. Many mixtures will keep some properties of the materials that go into them like the raisins mixed into your cereal flakes.

Solutions Solutions are formed when one or more substances dissolve in another. A solution is a mixture combined at the very smallest level, down to the particles that make up all matter. For example, when you add sugar to your cereal, the sugar dissolves in the milk to form a solution. Sugar (solid) and milk (liquid) combine to make a solution because the sugar completely dissolves in the milk. To separate a liquid-solid solution, you must evaporate away the liquid. This will leave the solid behind.

How Do You Separate Mixtures? There are different ways to separate a mixture. As already mentioned, you can “evaporate” the liquid out of some solutions to leave a solid behind. The fastest way to do this is by boiling the liquid. Another way to separate a mixture is by using a filter. Pour the entire mixture over a coffee filter inside a funnel. The liquid will flow through the filter and leave behind the solid particles on top of the filter. Another property to keep in mind when separating mixtures is “magnetism”. If, for example, you have iron filings mixed with sand, you can use a magnet to pull the iron filings out of the sand.

Lets Review…. Sugar and water are poured into a container and mixed together. Which method would be the fastest way to separate the sugar from the water-sugar solution? a. Use a magnet b. Pour the solution through a filter c. Boil the solution d. Sit the container in a window and wait for it to evaporate

Sugar and water are poured into a container and mixed together. Which method would be the fastest way to separate the sugar from the water-sugar solution? Correct answer: Boil the solution

When iron filings are mixed with sand, they create a mixture. What would be the best way to separate the ingredients in the mixture? a. Put the mixture in water and stir it b. Use a magnet to separate the iron filings c. Pour the mixture through a filter

When iron filings are mixed with sand, they create a mixture. What would be the best way to separate the ingredients in the mixture? The correct answer is: Use a magnet to separate the iron filings.

Sally made four cups of water. She added different material in each cup and stirred it. Which of the following will form a solution with the water? a. Sugar b. Sand c. Salad oil
