Welcome Back Hawks! The world did NOT end! 1 semester down, 7 to go. CLEAN OUT YOUR STUDENT FILES! NEW WARM UP SHEETS TODAY! Warm Up – 1/7/2013 1.List at least one thing from each of the four EESP categories on your warm up sheet. 2.Summarize one news story from CNN student news and decide which of the four categories it fits.

Should you throw away 1 st semester material???? No! Clean it out of your binder and keep it in a safe place at home. You will need all of this information to study for your EOC (end of course exam) given by the state of Texas AND your final exam given by me!

Classroom Expectations Review True or False Backpacks may be kept at your desk. Gum Chewing is NOT allowed. Water as well as other food and drinks are allowed. It’s okay to drop your stuff off in class and then roam the halls during passing period. Turn assignments in by dropping them on Mrs. Brown’s desk.

It’s quite simple… Be Prompt Be Prepared Be Present Be Respectful Be Positive Follow all class, school and district expectations. Rule to live by…if you have to ask yourself “is this okay?...it’s probably not!”

Flash Review of Semester 1…. Physical Geography Population Migration Political Geography (borders, governments, regions) Culture (Folk/Pop, Religion, Ethnicity)

Second Semester Overview…. Economic Development Economic Activities, Economic Systems Natural Resources Advances in Science and Technology Globalization Change over Time… urbanization, migration Comparing Regions of the World using all data from the year (culture, population, physical geography, economics, etc) Contemporary Issues --- aka Current Events

Today’s Lesson… MDC’s and LDC’s Less Developed Countries More Developed Countries What does this really mean? (rhetorical question….. )

Characteristics of MDC’s & LDC’s With a partner or on your own, place the following words on the side of the t-chart in which you think they MOST belong. Low GDP $$$ Advanced Technology Poor Education High Literacy Infrastructure Clean Water Low Sanitation Low Literacy High GDP $$$ India Nigeria United States France Mexico

What is infrastructure? Basic framework in a country including: modes of transportation (highways, airports, railroads) lines of communication (telephones, cell phones, internet) Power/energy access (electricity, gas lines, water/sewage, gas stations, etc)

Indicators of Development What do you look at to see what a country’s level of development is? Economic indicators of development – Gross domestic product per capita – Types of jobs – Raw materials – Consumer goods Social indicators of development – Education and literacy – Health and welfare Demographic indicators of development – Life expectancy–Infant mortality rate – Natural increase rate–Crude birth rate

The United Nation (UN) put together several of the indicators into a formula to calculate a countries level of development. Each country is assigned a number based on this formula. Then countries can be labeled as MDC or LDC based on this formula called… HUMAN DEVELOPMENT INDEX, or HDI

Human Development Index – Four FactorsHuman Development Index – Four Factors EconomicEconomic –1. GDP per capita (money earned per year per person) SocialSocial –2. Literacy rate (percentage of population that can read/write) –3. Education Attainment (years in school) DemographicDemographic –4. Life Expectancy (average age a person will live)

Human Development Index Fig. 9-1: Developed by the United Nations, the HDI combines several measures of development: life expectancy at birth, adjusted GDP per capita, and knowledge (schooling and literacy). HDI – Four Factors Economic 1. GDP per capitaSocial 2. Literacy rate 3. Education AttainmentDemographic 4. Life Expectancy Norway Niger

Economic Indicator:Annual GDP per Capita MDCs Average – $20,000 $10 - $15 per hour LDCs Average – $1,000 $0.50 per hour

Social Indicators of Development More developed countries use part of their greater wealth to provide schools, hospitals, and welfare services. In turn, this well-educated, healthy, and secure population can be more economically productive.

Social indicator: Literacy Rate Where do you notice the highest literacy rates? The lowest?

Demo Indicator: Life Expectancy Fig. 2-11: Life expectancy at birth is the average number of years a newborn infant can expect to live. The highest life expectancies are generally in the wealthiest countries, and the lowest in the poorest countries. Why???

A few videos showing HDI’s http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTHlJsUD M18 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTHlJsUD M18 LDC Link (above) MDC Link (start at 5:40) http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&v=TM ZRKHsXLGo&feature=endscreen http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&v=TM ZRKHsXLGo&feature=endscreen

More and Less Developed Regions Fig. 9-8: The less developed regions include Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa, Middle East, South Asia, East Asia, and Southeast Asia. 0.94 0.92 0.78 0.93 0.78 0.72 0.71 0.66 0.58 0.47

On your map.. Shade in where MDC’s and LDC’s are on Earth. List 5 countries in each, label appropriately. 5 minutes.

LDC’s or Developing Countries

MDC’s or Developed Countries

So the big question is…. WHY? Why is there so much inequality among countries on earth? How did this happen? Is it caused by… Environmental features (water, fertile soil, mountains, deserts) Social features (traditions, religions, cultures) Political features (governments, wars) The answer is a combination of all of the above

One theory to help explain this inequality is called… Guns Germs and Steel by Jarred Diamond We will begin watching his movie today to help build a foundation to answer this big question…. Of WHY the world is so unequal. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CyRa5P6xVo8 (link to Guns Germs and Steel) **Homework Packet 3-1 due next Thursday 1/27 or Friday 01/18 with a QUIZ
